I've tried pumpkins a number of times without a ton of success. I've gotten many large healthy plants but a ton less fruit than expected. One variety I did have good luck with a number of years back is "Triple Treat".

I used to grow pumpkins 2 times a year and the variety that's always been a real heavy producer for me is the New England Pie. They are smaller pumpkins, but each vine usually has 5-6 on it. Just keep in mind the plants will produce based on how much space, sun, and nutrients that are available to them. All varieties are heavy feeders that take up a lot of space for each set of plants.

I've grown the jack-o-lantern type and they had fairly good results (2-3 on each vine, medium size). If you start them at the beginning of July (perfect timing for Halloween) you should try putting shade cloth over the whole plant once they are 3-6 inches tall (I use rocks and wood steaks to keep the fabric off the leaves at the start). It helps keep the burning sun off them and keeps the vine borers away from them.

I've never really liked the huge varieties (big max, etc) for a few reasons. They usually grow a little misshapen and never really get that true orange color. Not to mention the big ones get really heavy, and it's kind of a pain to carry them around :P

I have grown a patch the last two years and had no problems aside from birds stealing seedlings and this year mice stealing seeds, I started in July and the second year in August, they ended up on the same schedule of ripening so I waited until August this year to. Jarrahdale and Musque du Provence (Fairytale) have done the best for me Rouge vif de' tampe (Cinderella) did well to. As far as Jack O'Lantern types Howden did ok 2 decent sized pumpkins on one vine but aside from that the C. Pepo types haven't really performed that well for me. I have had the best luck with C. Moschatas, C. Mixta, and then C. Maximas.

'Lumina' was highly productive for me. I remember my small child was highly disappointed and a little ticked off that I grew a white pumpkin.
