Project: DH's downstairs study

Colors: Greens, mustard, browns

Room Description: 13' x 25' with an ell at one end 7' x 4', 10 ft ceiling, 10" crown molding painted white, walls painted BM Albescience, carpeted with Karastan French Check in green, built in bookshelves at the end of the room with the ell.

DH's home office is a wreck! And i mean that literally. He never got it sorted after the flood from frozen pipes ruined it the night before we were to start remodeling the other finished space downstairs. He emphatically did not want his office to be part of the downstairs remodel (which i think he now regrets) and he has wholeheartedly refused to even let me in to help him organize it. The molding and half the ceiling and carpet were all replaced, and the bookcases fixed. Then he just moved his stuff back in in boxes, pulling out stuff as needed or buying again somethibg that was boxed and too much trouble to find. I periodically ask if i can get in there and do something with it and he has always refused.....until now. He has that fabulous check carpet and built-ins, and an adjustable height table he uses as his desk (ugly as sin, but adjusts electronically according to how his back feels.). The thing is, i have a limited time in which to perform this miracle. I am trying to amass everything i need quickly, as when it is all here im calling in people to basically remove everything in there that isnt nailed down. He is only interested in function, so i am sticking with catalog /off the rack / quick ship kind of stuff for this project....no expensive designer fees for this room!

So far i have purchased the Austin bookcase from Pottery Barn, which is manly looking, very sturdy and deep enough to hold his THREE laser printers and video editing stuff (dont ask). He has his hideous desk, so we still need a sofa, cocktail table and end table, uunbreakable lamp. And a 72" flatscreen for tennis videos (another dont ask).

I have already purchased artwork for this room (bought and stored, biding my time) that looks fabulous with the carpet: two large Audubon prints and one oil painting of a hunting dog:

I really love the framing on the prints, they came out beautifully although I am afraid the wood grain wont be too visible once they are on the walls.

This is his wool carpet:

I was planning on a medium brown leather sofa but dh now says leather, meh. He wants either one cushion or two on the sofa deck, not three. A single cushion usually means special order andi dont have time for that. Budget sofa should not exceed $3000, less is better, cannot be lIght colored because he is messy and takes illegal snacks down there :-) now i am thinking microfiber but dont know what color.

Have looked at this table for sofa, same line for one end table, they dont match shelving but are similar, im hoping that might make it all look office-y? Planked top, distressed, indestructible?

Would love a sofa recommendation, need medium size 83" or so, less would be good as long as inside dimension is at least 75".....and LOW arms.

thanks in advance, GWers!

When I need a sofa I just go to Crate & Barrel. Their stuff looks great, holds up fairly well and doesn't last so long you want to kill yourself. It also isn't a budget buster.

Some will pay a lot for upholstered sofa. But it loses value faster than anything else. I've seen $15,000 custom sofas go for $1200 at auctions when houses are sold.

Crate has custom upholstery sales in September. If you find something you like there you may also enjoy some savings then.

Thank you for that recommendation, rococo! I have looked exhaustively at the CB site but the only fabrics they have online are in dreary, grayed out colors. I was hoping to wrap this up more quickly :-). Their upholstery is from Lee Industries, whose custom ship time is about twelve weeks---our ID ordered two sofas and two chairs for us from Lee last year and it took a long time.... I would like to be finished by September 30 if at all possible.

So, I have a mood board from when I was planning on a leather sofa. I love the fabric sample there but have cropped all identifying info from that picture, dope that I am!

No recommendation but just wanted to say every time I see your fab brick floors I drool just a little.

Thanks, theclose, we love them, and if it were practical I would use brick as flooring for every bathroom we have!

Whoa, I love that chevron pattern yellow and white upholstery at West Elm, for got about them!

KSWL, love the Karastan French check. Their wool rugs wear like iron.

i know you don't want to go custom but I highly recommend Smith Brothers. It's made in the U.S. and their furniture is extremely well made. This is my favorite sofa but it is too fussy for the room your planning.

Browsing around today outside Portland, I saw a Clayton Marcus conversation style sofa I was drooling over with a fabric that would probably work for you but it had 3 cushions. It was a tad under $3000. It was the Kennedy style.

No experience with their sofas, but Basset has a big selection of fabrics and sofas that might work for you. We bought some tables for the lake from there and didn't break the bank. DD bought a chair and ottoman and loves it. The fabric is very nice.

Will check out Clayton Marcus and Smith Bros, thanks for those suggestions.

What at do you think of a mustard colored sofa in microfiber----see below for color, not necessarily style. I like the style but am afraid the casters may be too delicate for DH.

Would need interesting pillows on such a solid sofa....

I like the mustard with the other colors!

I have the ballards coffee table and I am disappointed with the look. It has some kind of coating on it. The chipped areas are white underneath, kind of like a gesso. It just looks fake.

Have you taken a look at home decorators? The coffee table looks more like real wood, at least online :)

    I like the leather sofa.

I like the leather sofa, or the idea of a leather sofa, but I do like the mustard color with all that green. I've seen the Ballard cocktail table in their outlet in Atlanta and the quality and appearance vary greatly between one table and another. But I would like that sort of look for a cocktail and end table, wood and metal. Have not looked at HDC but will go there now, thanks.

Here is a West Elm sofa in a mustard and yellow chevron print:

That may be too much pattern even for me, with the carpet.

I have the Durham end tables and I think they're great!

The CB sale starts in mid August and is for custom upholstery, I'm pretty sure, not the "stock" fabrics they show online.

Do you happen to know their delivery time on leather, Sueb? I didn't want to wait for furniture from the Lee Industries glacier factor----again. (Last year we had to change ID's flight down because upholstered pieces were not in.)

i came across this curved sectional on the Home Decorators site and am very taken with the shape! It is huge----bigger than I wanted----and a sectional, which I also don't want, but it looks DH and dog proof. Will have to measure.

the Durham cocktail tables and side tables I saw were at the Ballard outlet in Atlanta, so they may have been there because something was wrong with them.

Mock up of room elements with sofa above and with a green one Sueb20 posted on another thread. The color behind the bookcase, top right, is wall color in the room. Also, I did the print mockup online at the framers site; our prints have a nicer, chunkier wood frame and no matting.

I don't care for the solid mustard at all... I like the chevron, but agree, that might be a bit much.

I like the looks of the brown leather, but if your husband doesn't like leather, 2nd best is the curved color-- whatever that is- taupe?! I like the shape too!

Wisteria has some nifty stuff to go with your mood board. I also like this sofa but know nothing of the quality. It's on sale too! Well for some reason pictures will not go through. It's the Gondola sofa in 30,000 double rub- color- Pear. Edited to add: I think this will take longer than you want though, 6 to 8 week lead time.

That is a cute, unusual sofa, jterrilyn! The dimensions are now quite right for DH to lounge on it but the arms are the perfect height. If he is by himself he does not sit on a sofa, he is always stretched out, and at 6'3" he needs both low arms and a minimum width of about 80". I would get that in a heartbeat for myself.

I like that one, Pal, and it was a contender until DH said he wanted a single seat cushion or no more than two. His sofa lounging is a science :-) to him, anyway.

Here is an inexpensive IKEA sofa in caramel leather for about $1800. But with those high arms, I don't think it will be comfortable.

It doesn't look bad in the context of the room either

Looking back at the pictures, it seems a green sofa is just too much green. The room needs an additional color, perhaps a print?

This is why I don't like to do this stuff! Add to the fact that I don't "do" manly!

Oh heck , just put a day bed in there lol.

Have you looked at This End Up? Their sofas are very sturdy, not feminine looking, have sleeper options, and you can get multiple cushion covers so that you can take them off and wash them when they get too doggy. We found ours used and got custom covers made because we didn't like the TEU fabric options. The sofa looks great and is very comfortable.

Restoration Hardware has this daybed on sale. It's called English Roll Arm daybed , several fabrics.

Off topic but they have stopped making the French check broadloom carpet. Depressing.

I think this is nice looking sofa-- http://www.birchlane.com/Birch-Lane-Montgomery-Upholstered-Sofa-BL3371.html?PiID[]=14790861#reviews

The avocado color or the mushroom both would look nice-- I think they have enough texture and wouldn't be "too" green.

I think if you do a print, I think it would need to be in a small scale, with the checked carpet. A nubby or boucle tweed would look great in there!

Justerrilyn, what is the name and mfg of the last sofa you posted. If it comes in another color it would be perfect!

Thanks for that link jlc, and I also think a nubby texture would look great.

Renovatorgirl, I went to the TEU site and they have a surprising range of sofas and fabrics, I will look through them all tomorrow, thank you.

Pal, I cannot believe they finally pulled the plug on French check! They have been rotating the colors for years now, making one or two unavailable then bringing them back and pulling another color temporarily off the market, or so the carpet lady told us. Now that nylon rugs are made so much better (and stain resistant) nobody wants to pay for one room what a whole house would cost. The higher end mfgs (Maslan, Stark, etc) have gotten so expensive they are out of reach for most people, and they used to represent just the "best," not the "stratosphere."

this is not justerrilyn but I believe the one she posted is from Restoration Hardware and is called Belgian Classic slope arm upholstered sofa
