You could put a carpet runner along that section, or a sofa table if you really think something is required. I think it looks good as is!

I would push the couch back just about a foot, so it's not blocking the fireplace, and then put a narrow sofa table behind it, where you might add one reading lamp and a couple of decorations (and, if it has a lower shelf, even store an afghan or some games). Then let the rest of the space live free. :)

evilcko - thank you for the rug link. We are struggling with the size. The one pictured is a 6x9 wool rug and I agree it's too small. Large rugs can get so expensive!

What about a soft table with storage (like a buffet table) with a few pictures frames / vase on top.

I would center your rug with the firepalce for sure with couch's front feet resting on the rug. Behind the couch add a console table if you still need to fill that space and move the chair at this end closer to the couch and place the table (and a lamp) at end of couch (see below). I would move the floor lamp next to the chair by the firepalce and your room will feel much more balanced.

Is it possible to angle the sofa on the right front corner of the rug and moving the chair, angled in the right corner near the fireplace? You would need to move the rug towards the window, but that would be something to play with to get right. The outcome is to have views of the tv, fireplace, and windows from each seat; use all of the room; maintain openness; and not block the windows.

You are listing to port, yes? I see the reasoning for sofa location, so rather than adjust too much there, you might cheat the right side in more with the addition of verticals along the window wall - tall plants/ columns, for instance, would be a fairly easy find. I like Charlene's idea of a runner there,too. I think the sofa could go back just enough to clear the view of the fireplace without harming your TV viewing, and would consider going up a size in your area rug to compensate. A larger coffee table, and the addition of a side table on our side of the sofa - visually light choices ( leggy would be good) will help with balance,too.

If you do add a sofa table, look for a shallow selection. A glass or lucite choice would help lessen the load, and sticking to low or glass objects on top would make the most of the view beyond. Best of luck with your room.
