Preferences

I realized that I prefer fast growing plants over slow growing ones. I love to look at a plant and see new growth emerging. I love waiting for the curled up leaves to unfurl. I can't stand plants that seem to just sit there. Like the stupid cactus my husband bought (the red spikes on it are pretty though) and the Sanservia I bought because they're so popular LOL.

So what is everybody's preferences???

Mrblubs I love how you put that about the slow growers!!! I have maybe 6 plants that grow slowly and I enjoy looking at them because they're beautiful and it is pretty exciting when a slow grower sprouts a new leaf!!!

I don't have a preference really. I just like plants that tolerate me and that I can keep alive. Most of them therefore are slow growers. It is quite exciting when a plant that hasn't done much in the past year all of a sudden has a growth spurt.

I have a Euphorbia lactea (I think that's what it is) that didn't do anything for oh I'd say at least a couple years. I thought maybe it had no roots (was too busy to check) but now this year it's put on some noticeable growth and I'm thrilled.

I also have limited space so anything that grows too quickly will outgrow it's allotted piece of real estate. I need a bigger house. >_<

Bunnygurl I have a lot of fast growers that are probably gonna end up bunched together because of my small space LOL. But I'll work something out!!! What type of plants do you have?

Bunnygurl, I have the same problem! All my plants are situated in my room with the exception of my schefflera, haworthia, and My succulent dish which are downstairs. I've technically run out of viable plant space as of now. I have 3 plants randomly placed on the floor and my window will be more than full come winter.... Yet I still need more!

I think, if I could, I'd get rid of one of my Spiders. They grow outwards to much and also have tons of the baby vines everywhere, thus they take up some valuable space.. The two smaller ones I have take up half of the windowsill and if they're not moved there everyday in the winter their leaves collapse on themselves.... But i love em!

Well, I have lots of collections (Citrus, tropical fruits, cacti & other succulents, bromeliads, aroids, and others), but I would say my speciality is palms and cycads, based on species count. Also, my tastes have changed from purely tropical plants to more subtropical species that can take a few degrees or more of frost. My tastes have changed from a passion of exclusive indoor gardening to outdoor gardening and anything in between.

Subtropix I can't wait to get out of an apartment into a house so I can experiment outdoors!!!

OMG, you have no idea how the collecting/hoarding bug bites once the sky's the limit!

    LOL.

P.S., I first got bitten in a big city apartment too for the first time. No regrets though. Peace out.

jamilalshaw26 - I have mostly cacti and succulents that are slow (or at least slowish) growing like a couple of Haworthia, Jades, Ponytail Palm (one of my absolute favorites), various cacti, one variegated Spath, 6 Phal orchids, a variegated ficus, a couple of Dracaena marginatas and a Schefflera actinophylla. The last three are my biggest plants but they're slow growing however I've had them for a significant time so they're quite large but they have upwards growth so I can handle that. It's the trailers and the spreaders that cause me issues. Oh and a seed tray that's been seeing more action than ever thanks to a bunch of enablers over on the Adenium forum. -_-

Mr.Blubs - I used to have a whole bedroom dedicated to my plants but now I need that bedroom for baby #2 so I've had to downsize to one little shelving unit with 3 shelves (not including the floor which I guess would make 4) sitting in front of my SW patio door. I have a large Southern facing deck where I put a bunch outside when it's warm but I've added quite a few over the past month or two so I'm kind of concerned when winter comes back around. I have a couple of plants that tolerate a little less light in my living room that has an East facing orientation but luckily the one wall is ENTIRELY window which I love. Makes the loss of my plant room sting a little less but some would say children are more important. :P I used to have a spider plant and it grew like it was trying to take over the world. I only had it for a couple years and it went from a 2in pot to a 10in pot and was in dire need for a 12in pot but I got rid of it before that point. It was absolutely massive and had at least a hundred plantlets. Don't get me wrong I LOVED that plant but I need a bigger house if I'm to grow one of those again. They keep talking to me every time I go to the garden centre. Breaks my heart I have to ignore them. :/

Haha, yeah I guess a baby is far more important than a plant (in some instances :P). My 'big' Spider plant was about 3 feet wide and it was huge! I think now, that the hail was a good thing! It's ccoming back now however...

I find it hard to not buy Spiders too... My Rona has a section of tiny plants in 1 inch cups for 2 bucks and there's always Spiders in there. Always on the brink of death but I know I just can't get one.... I think the most plants that I can get (in which they all can do well) is 3....Trying to narrow down a list to 3 plants I want seems impossible! Though I might get some super low light plants if it comes down to it!

I just got beaten down with hail over here today. Thankfully the plants that are outside are protected from all angles except the front by the shelf and my deck. My shelf is taller than my deck wall but I don't put anything higher than this for exactly this reason. Weather is so unpredictable here. A couple years ago we had a massive snow storm in July. Ended up with about 6inches of snow....in JULY! Was not impressed. It was gone by the next day but still...

I have done very well resisting so far...so far...I'm purposely focusing on succulents to keep me away from these fast growing monsters. Someone should tell my Schefflera to slow down, it's not a race. 3 plants? Just 3 plants? To me that sounds beyond impossible and borderline blasphemous. I tried collecting snakes for a while (you can stack the cages on top of each other) but my plants kept calling me back loudly and fiercely.

I just realized your in the same zone as me! FINALLY someone knows the hell I have climate wise! Though, I've never gotten snow in July. I've heard tales of It in June and last year it snowed a ton in September with leaves still on the trees.. If it ever snows here in July I'm done and I'm moving to Florida. Yeesh that really sucks.

Ha, well probably 3 all at once then probably a month or two down the line a few more might show up on my doorstep. Then I'll proudly open the door and let them come in no questions asked. I've tried many times to stop getting more as I tell myself I have no more space (I don't believe me) but I always will get more in some way or another.... I havnt gotten a new plant since the beginning of May and that's I think the longest I've ever lasted! So once I find the ones I want, the money will come out. Then the process will repeat itself.

Snake collecting? Must have been fun!

Last year snowed in September.....? Where are you if you don't mind me asking (I'm in Southern Alberta Canada) because I had that exact same thing happen in September here last year. Took down ALOT of massive tree branches. Tons of damage. The person in the house across the street from me purposely parked their care under their big tree...looking for an insurance payout perhaps? Lucky them their big branches never broke.

Homeless plants on ones doorstep is heartbreaking. I don't blame you for taking them in from the cold.

Must have been fun? Oh no, it's still fun and I still have them all (all 24) but the purchasing has slowed to a stagnant crawl. Believe it or not those little creatures are WAAAAAY more expensive than plants.

That's funny, I live in Calgary! There was a tree here that bent over so the top of it was touching the road. Yet it never snapped. We didn't get much tree damage here in my part of the city as there's not alot of the real older bigger trees, but we still got lots of bending. I like to think I saved my trees as I shook em off every hour or so.. Hehe.

That's a lot of snakes! I bet they are really expensive... I have e 1 fishtank and I spend hundreds of dollars on it every year. Can't imagine the payload for 24 snakes!

No. Way. I found one! I live in Calgary as well. NE Whitehorn. We've got some decent sized trees here. The city was down here doing a fair bit of clean up afterwards. There was a fair bit of debris on the ground but mostly I think it was a lot of compromised branches that weren't safe and needed to be removed. I think other places in the city got hit a lot worse. I only have a couple small trees where snow doesn't collect and one massive pine but that thing's like a mountain. Immovable.

    About $20,000 over 3.5 years. >_<

Sorry jamilalshaw26, we seem to have hijacked your thread a bit.

Haha, that's so funny! I live in the NW by Crowfoot. Hopefully that doesn't happen this year....

Big storm outside right now. Saying golf ball sized hail. I hope it misses us!

    Oh yeah, sorry jamilalshaw26!

Mmmm...Crowfoot... My favorite Chinese food restaurant is over there. Don't remember the name though. They have buffet until 2pm.

Yup. I got the storm too. No hail yet but I got some yesterday and I really don't need anymore. Makes it kinda difficult to finish making my gritty mix mother nature keeps huffing and puffing and trying to blow my house down and furiously spitting in the process OH there's the hail..... -_-

    Hmm, I don't know either...

So you got the storm? Not gonna like this but clear skies here now. We seem to be in some bubble up here as the storms always come close then shoot away usually towards Airdrie. Good luck with the hail! Hopefully it doesn't do anything to major.

It think it all depends on what one wants to achieve. For example, I was really hoping to create a bit of an indoor plant "curtain" this summer with English ivy, thinking it would grow really fast. Sadly, it did not. I do like the vining plants that grow fast because they can be sculpted in a lot of neat ways.

But it you live in a small space in a city, like I do, you might want slow growers for your corner plants. If a tree reaches 8 feet tall or 5 feet wide in no time, not good. I don't think this is typically a problem for indoor plants due to their restricted environments, but the philodendron monstera is certainly not on my list for now.

MrBlubs what are you apologizing for?

We took over your thread a bit :P

Oh yea y'all did. Its all good though!!!
