Attack of the 50 foot squash

I just got back from a 2 week vacation, and apparently
conditions at home were very much to the liking of our one single Long
Island Cheese Squash plant.
Its now nearly filling the entire garden as well as taking over an area of the yard of nearly the same size as the garden.

Its got one squash that's pretty far along, plus a dozen of so about the size of a cantaloupe.

I've never grown this plant before. How do you know when they are ready to pick?

Is it reasonable to pick one "early"? Thanks in advance for any advice.
