Very Nice! I need to visit Lowe's again next week. You never know what they get in unless you visit.

I know! They had another very beautiful one about a month ago and they only got 1 in. I did not buy it. I went back a few days later and of course it was gone!

So when i saw this silver one i knew i needed to scoop it up.

They didn't have this particular begonia when I visited in early August but I did find this one (last one when I got there).

I have got umpteen EA Rexes at Lowe's and every one has gone kaput. I just cannot keep a Rex alive, but I keep trying. Maybe, someday ....

The only begonia I have had luck with is a Beefsteak, but I still haven't been able to propagate it by any method.

What are you doing to kill them all? Overwatering, not enough water? Light situation?

Here are some of the little rexes I got earlier this spring from Walmart and Lowe's. I expect some decline during winter but they should still stay strong if I find an adequate spot under lights (12 hours a day).

Here they are about 3 weeks ago outdoors under a big beech tree receiving slanted sun rays during the morning and evening hours.

If I knew what I was doing wrong, I wouldn't do it. LOL. Most likely, I'm overwatering. Or perhaps humidity is the problem. Or temperature. Should I transfer it from the plastic pot into unglazed clay? Rex is the most difficult plant I've ever dealt with.

My apartment windows are all a SE exposure, average humidity, my year-round comfort level is around 65 - 70 degrees, fresh air & fan over AC, hot water baseboard heat in winter, no means of summering outside. I am at a total loss on how to not be defeated by these little beauties.

@hc mcdole, I saw on another thread a pic of your cuttings. If I take cuttings of my hardy begonias now, it being Fall in S Texas, do I need to keep them potted til next spring or can I plant directly inground once they have nice roots. And pls define nice roots. Tried to send private msg but I guess you're not set up?

When you say hardy begonias, most folks think of grandis. I have a feeling this is not what you meant. I would not trust newly cut begonias to make roots while it is cool or cold - I would bring them indoors to keep them warm and happy to make roots and leaves. Nice roots would probably be best defined as big as the leaf and can support new growth. Less than nice means you are still babying it along.

This is plant I'm talking about. Will it develop nice roots as you describe between now and Dec? I have it planted Inground since Sept 2014, doing well

I don't know your swing of temps but if it stays warm and the plant seems robust, give it a try. Sometimes you have to experiment - push the boundary. Keep a plant indoors for insurance and another one in the ground.

That plant looks like it has U358 in its background. Here is my U358 for comparison. I think John Boggan has planted this same begonia in the ground and it comes back for him close to Washington, D.C.
