Week 65: exploring Gardenweb

last modified: 11 years ago

This week I've been particularly bored during the day when I can't work on any projects and I started veering outside the kitchen forums for the first time.

Wow!!! Obviously I knew there was a wealth of information regarding gardening on GARDENweb but I had never really looked at the other forums on this site.

After exploring, I found it refreshing to see familiar names, people I "know" on other sections so this weeks topic is pretty selfish on my part.

What other forums on GW do you look at? What are your favorites? I particularly like The Kitchen Table as it truly does remind me of sitting around the kitchen table with a cup of coffee and chatting.

Any you would recommend to others?

I am banned from other sections of Houzz....ever seen a ferret with shiny objects?? Every time I venture over to the dark side I see something I want and that results in a "kitchen planning meeting:" (now also prohibited) I have also been banned from lighting stores, tile shops and the paint department (at any store). All joking aside, I found Houzz first and someone mentioned GW in one of the posts and the rest is history. I like being able to search for items and there are some really cool ideas out there. I also like the ideabooks option...yup banned from them now too :P

I really like the Smaller Homes forum and the Cottage Garden forum. Lots of nice people on those forums, but some left after Houzz merger.

Also spend some time in Building a Home forum, but I've been known to wander into Antique Roses and Old Houses....even Home Decorating.

Home and kitchen plans help me relax, when I'm stressed. The detail and the concentration help me focus and lets my subconscious deal with the problems. At least that what my grandmother used to tell me. She used intricate crochet patterns, but I'm not that patient! :)

I'm a regular on home decorating and have occasionally ventured to the garden side, most recently the CA gardening forum. I also check the bathroom forum and the appliances forum fairly often.

I only go to the bathrooms section other than here. I should probably read some of the garden threads. I need help with that. LOL

I check in regularly here and Building a Home and Smaller homes. Once in a while I look at other sub-forums. We're not ready for gardening yet, but I do some studying on Carolina Gardening. I'm also interested in Hostas and Begonias. There will be more.....

I check in frequently on the Pools and Spas forum, because that is our next project, now that we've finished our fabulous kitchen! Also, the Cooking forum for fun ideas.

Love the organizing forum. Because I, the most dis and un organized person, am a GLUTTON for punishment. I want to be organized but it isn't happening. Also love the perennials and cottage garden forums. Love the people on those 2 as well as here. GW such a nice addictive place to visit. :)

    Disorganized/Unorganized meaning. I'm both.

I came to GW in Mid-Atlantic Gardening and still try to keep my toes in there. I'm dedicated to the Maples forum, due to my Japanese Maple collections. Hosta, Trees in general, paint, woodworking and renewable energy are other places I stick my nose into.

I will never be a serious blog fan. There's nothing like getting a wealth of opinions, vs. just one person trumpeting they've found the ONLY and the BEST way to do xxxx. I don't even live chat when I need something. Boards it is.

After all. What would we do without each other? (A possible next query?)

Bulding a Home forum really feeds into my lifetime obsession with floorplans (seriously, even at 5 I slipped my parents' House and Home, etc, from the stack of mail). Also Home Decorating and its sister, Home Decorating Conversations, which has nothing to do with decorating, and which disappeared at the merge but was restored at our mournful request, thanks Tamara!) Reader's Paradise, Caregivers now, too. I think Hot Topics is still out there, lurking in the shadows, but I usually forget to snoop around for it.

I was hunting in Woodlands and Nature forums for tips on getting rid of the poison ivy that almost got rid of me. Like in all forums, there was the grump who said (with reason) "why do you come to a nature forum if you want to destroy nature?" But, I did subdue the PI with only occasional control missions required now.

Bathrooms, seems to be a bit more active that it used to be?

I used to enjoy Holidays, and the gals who posted their lovely table settings for daily and unusual holiday use. But now I'm too obsessed with the Building forum.

I occasionally pop into Old House, Smaller home, Organizing, too.

I don't go to Houzz, I'm too much of a homebody and like it here :) I'm sure I'm missing out on some great conversations, but I can only handle so much!

ETA The Kitchen Table! I don't post much, but love to perch on my stool in the corner to listen in.

I still have my original gardenweb kitchens and building a home links pinned on my toolbar to. They still work and I click and go straight here. I hardly ever actually enter from Houzz and only go that route if I am trying to contact someone off line via message.

Done (okay ALMOST done) with the kitchen and finished with the house but I can't stay away. I love looking at floor plans - kitchens, the whole house, a closet - it doesn't matter I love to look and read all the creative solutions proposed on here.

Other areas I've perused: smaller homes, bathrooms, appliances, home decorating. I see now there is an organization one thanks to yeonassky. I too struggle with keeping on top of mainly the plethora of papers in this house! Haven't near mastered that yet. I do have my kitchen drawers under control however. :)

I need to catch the kitchen table too.

I used to be a regular at the KT (Kitchen Table). I was also a regular at the Cooking Forum. I started originally in the Recipe Exchange.

I haven't been to any of those in years.

I could go back and slide right back in, but I don't have enough time. I do miss some of the regulars though.

I also spent a few years in the PNW gardening forum.

So today I had the guys take down the cabinet over the peninsula...I LOVE IT gone! Now I have some repairs to do to the ceiling and the wall. The builder put those suckers up with 14 3" galvanized nails!

Christine, I also finally finished my other coffee table 2 weeks ago. Hubby and I also refinished an old dresser over a couple of weeks. I'll get pictures. He bought the oak dresser for $25. It looks amazing. With the old yellow paint stripped off and stained. It's his bar in the Man Room.

I now only have my writing desk to strip and redo.

Terri- yay!! Glad the cabs are gone, I'm sure it opens it up a lot!! Now to get rid of that faux Butcher block...

Terri - some great progress, wow! I still start out with the GW kitchen forum link, but also like the home decorating form, appliances forum, the bathroom forum (occasionally), and a few of the Garden Forums (depending on the current project/question). (P.S. can't believe this is week 65!).

I started on Smaller Homes (waving to LL, desertsteph, and other Smaller Homes peeps), and I enjoy checking the Old House, Remodeling, Home Repair, Home Decorating, Antiques, and the Grief forum. When I first started posting on GW I looked through all the forums that sounded interesting. Loved Garden Junk!

A relative of an ill KT regular once posted an update on this forum--I realized that she had the wrong forum so I posted a link on the KT and some nice person invited me to join their group. I didn't post for quite a while, but I enjoyed reading their chatty threads, and eventually started posting on the word game threads. There's a 'Song Title' thread that now has 965 posts.

I don't think I could keep up in a chat room setting (never tried). I like the message board format--it's here when I have time to spend, which is way too much on the Kitchens forum.

I visit the appliances forum quite a bit, I also enjoy the cooking forum, cookware, and California gardening, cacti and succulents. As a semi-retired carpenter/contractor and custom home builder of close to 40 years, I also read the remodeling, woodworking, and homebuilding forums, but for some reason rarely if ever post on those...

I poke around but I rarely post anywhere but here in Kitchens. I enjoy reading the Decorating discussions because I know I need help in those areas and I like to get ideas and learn what works, what doesn't and why. I really don't think there is a forum I haven't visited at least once or twice, some more than others. It depends on what itch I need to scratch.

Yep, TG, gonna replace the faux with real....lol..

It is amazing the amount of light that big ol cab strip was not letting in the kitchen.

It is now over the washer and dryer in the garage.

There are a lot of forums, but I tend to use the once that are frequented most.

    So I had to share.

Some of you may remember the shots I posted in [this thread[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/week-54-are-you-honest-with-others-or-at-least-yourself-dsvw-vd~3088425) with my main prep corner/area filled with binders, knife block, etc.

Today I have been giving my kitchen a deep cleaning. Removing everything from the counters and really scrubbing everything down, including the cabinets. That's probably one thing I would change is the lower shakers, flour, sugar, dust, etc always gets "caught" on the lip and is a pain to get out.

Anyway, while doing so I rearranged and found new homes for several things and now my prep corner looks like this!!

Sooo much more space to work!!! I'm loving it!

I hang out mostly on the kitchen forum & check in intermittently on the Home Decorating discussions side. A recent thread on Kitchens lead me to the Kitchen Table forum. That seems like a forum I would enjoy. No extra time now but winter is coming.

I love the home decorating forum! Nothing seems quite as frequented as the Kitchens forum, but it's a great runner up when it's a 'slow' day on here. I love seeing so many other styles and ideas for decorating.

When I have a specific question, I go to the appropriate forum, like Lighting, Plumbing, Cookware, Heating, or Appliances, but usually I'm here. But this thread pointed out Kitchen Table, and now I'm addicted to the Song Title game.

Texas, looks good! Terri, I feel your pain on those nails! They held my backless cupboards up as I discovered when I tore them out. Brute force, all the way! LOL

So, to continue getting ready for my new flooring, I decided to tackle the tile in the entryway.

After a few hours, I'm currently at this.

I had to stop because the baby needed her nap and those last tiles are right outside her door. That and my arms kind of feel like jelly now!

Man, I'll tell you, that area doesn't look that big until you are trying to pop out all the tiles!!
