Boy, I hope not six weeks!

Boy do I feel like a dummy. Just looked through my pictures and you were absolutely right, it was exactly two weeks. But that was the longest two weeks, it sure felt like six.

Dave, that is gorgeous and you will come home one day to some beautiful flowers!! I love that you have another one coming off the side!

Here's a photo 7 days after my first post. Some buds are lengthening! I think I'll see a few blooms toward the end of the week, just as we leave for vacation!

Maybe I can convince the family to stay home??

Laura, hoping you get a nice big inflo from Lani. My two Lani inflos have been blooming ALL summer. Amazing. Really like that one.

Dave my friend, apparently you couldn't convince the family to stay home on NoVa. Enjoy your time in Emerald Isle. I've spent some time there with my family and the R&R cannot be beat.

Hi Mike! No, the family would not tolerate a delayed start to vacation due to unopened plumeria blossoms.

So, we are here in NC. We did purchase hurricane insurance for our rental, but no 'plumeria' insurance. The Rental Company did not offer that for some reason.

Want to see those pictures when you come back home.

OK, well, I'm back from vacation and STILL no blooms. I understand there was a cool, overcast stretch of weather while away, so that may account for the slow development. Very close though!

Dave, one thing I have learned in the couple of years of great advice on this board, and my own personal experience with my first inflo, which now is pushing new blooms after I thought it wanted to dry up and drop off weeks ago, is these plants have a mind of their own. Anyway, that's my opinion. Maybe that's why I bought five more from MPG. The thrill of the challenge? Best, and hope your vacation in Emerald Isle was great.

Dave, my very first inflo that started blooming back on 8/6; the flowers started dropping off prematurely just two days later; it appeared the inflo wanted to dry up. I purposely didn't want to over water, but have since kept the plant just north of moist and I now see more activity...actually it appears a lot of blooms want to start pushing out. Is your experience in our zone to provide more or ample water when an inflo starts? You have forgotten more about these plants than I know. Thanks and best.

Mike, why some flowers fall off , others stay on, is still a mystery to me.

It might be attributed to bugs like thrips, or to plant maturity (developed root system) and size of plant, the variety, over- or underwatering (root damage), or maybe something else entirely.

Have to say I have never seen a problem with Penang Peach in this regard, but other varieties, yes, I've seen it.

One thing you could try is moving your plant into a shadier location.

This particular plant, Hilo Beauty, is about 6 feet tall. It tended to drop flowers when smaller. Takes a while for this one to achieve a 'critical mass' to sustain the inflo, I think. Also, this one seems not to enjoy really, really hot weather.

Growing plumerias in pots in the 'north' has its challenges.

Variety, environment, heat, humidity, container, soil choice, watering.. It's a recipe for beautiful inflos or drop.. Im Experiencing that with only one and it's my Scott Pratt. It's just not coming around and holding the buds. I think my issue was thrips and direct sun. My Taj Mahal was notorious for Bud Drop. I finally decided to give cuttings away.. Most owners of TM say they have the same problems too..

We have many challenges, Mike.. But it only makes it more rewarding to see the blooms finally appear to delight our senses... To be able to have these beauties like others in Florida, California , Texas etc makes it so satisfying to know " we can do it.." ;-)

I always water my trees when dry in the summer and never worry about over watering it's so hot here, they dry out so fast that I don't have to worry about them sitting in water That's all we worry about. I'd say water when dry and don't worry if it's every two - three days If dry, water..

Dave, at last it bloomed for you. I was in Peru last 10 days and missed my plants but my tahitian sunset and celadine still continue to grow with buds but no blooms yet. I think I am not fertilizing them enough ...

Looking good, Dave. Well done. Congratulations. My yellow inflo is still struggling to put out something. Had one flower just getting ready to open...was out on the Bay this weekend officiating a sailing regatta, when I got home Sunday it had fallen off before it opened. Hoping this great weather right now gives it a chance before it comes inside soon.
