Phil, You are right about the %'s being an unknown, but I believe that many of the good producers of quality of seed are getting closer to higher %'s.

Still a gamble.

Actually with the grafted trees, the caudex size will depend on the root stock portion of the tree. They can have just as good a caudex in later years if they where grafted onto a root stock that would grow larger naturally.

As Rick said it's a gamble because it's genetics. Of course the more you selectively breed a certain trait the more it will pop up. New/rare traits like purple flowers will probably be lower % because there has been less chance to isolate the genes.

As for the caudex, I believe you are thinking about cuttings that are rooted. Those never form a caudex.

I totally agree, Phil. It really takes a while to get down the basics. I had an adenium for over a year and didn't truly know how to care for it. Since I learned some of the proper ways, it is literally exploding with new growth. Adeniums will grow extremely quickly if given the right conditions.

I recommend the following read for a discussion on soils and how to best aerate the roots while still providing enough water for development. It really opened my eyes, and is exceptionally important for adeniums.
