The first generation of fall webworms was really bad here. The second generation has been hatching for a week now with a lot of eggs still being laid. I saw probably 3 times as many egg clusters today on my young pecan trees as I have seen in the ten years I have been here. On my 10 year old trees that are about 15 ft tall I easily can find 4 or 5 clusters hatched and another 10 not yet hatched, plus a lot of the white moths laying eggs at this moment.

If I don't treat them I will have almost total defoliation a month from now. That would mean likely no good nuts and maybe no return crop next year. If you have the types of trees they eat, go look now for the nickel sized white egg masses on the healthiest areas of the trees. Spray in the next week if you can use growth regulators. Wait a week if you have to use something that kills on contact and can only spray once.

I noticed they avoid laying eggs on areas of trees damaged from the first generation, and they also have totally avoided my pecan trees that had bad leaf scab this year. They prefer the healthiest leaves they can find.
