12" Deep Base Cabinets?

Are 12" deep base cabinets available anywhere---without being custom built? I would like to have a 36" deep island but, instead of having corbels to support the overhang, I'd like to put 24" cabinets and 12" cabinets back-to-back. Then I would just have the standard overhang on all sides. We will not use the island for eating and don't plan to have bar stools around the island.

Most cabinet brands have them! If they dont, then order wall cabinets to size and build up your own toekick. It can be cheaper to do it that way sometimes anyway. Depends on the brand of cabinets you are getting.

Pretty sure I saw them yesterday when I was looking at IKEA cabinets. I think I even saw 12" deep drawer options.

FYI...Your island will now be 39" deep, not 36".

    1.5" counter overhang in front + 24"D cabinet + 12"D cabinet + 1.5" counter overhang on the back = 39"

Those extra 3" are nice, IMO! If you can still fit a 39" deep island, it's definitely the way to go!

We used wall cabinets to do that. Here's a picture. The cabinets to the left of the stools are 12" deep.

Cheapest way is to use a wall cabinet and build a base. Almost every line above the entry level price point will make a 12 deep base.

I had that in our last home with glass fronts. It made a pretty display case.

Wow! Thanks for the quick and helpful answers. So the consensus is the better deal is to buy the wall cabinets and convert them to a base cabinet by adding a toe kick? I don't mind that it will result in no drawers, as I just want that bit of extra space on top of the island and the shallow cabinets should also be quite useful!

Buehl, Thanks for the reminder. I was aware of the overhang on all sides, but it could have been a costly mistake if I wasn't.

Weaver2, Have you used Ikea cabinets? I looked at their cabinets briefly when shopping for something else, but didn't really look into the cost or quality they offered.

SJHockeyFan, I really like those stools! Almost convinces me that I want an overhang after all. Don't think I'll change my mind, but can you tell me where you found them? Maybe I can find an excuse to put them somewhere else.

Karenseb, The glass fronts sound wonderful.

Sail_Away - I figured you probably knew since I've seen you around for years, but just in case you didn't... Plus, if anyone who doesn't know reads this, I wanted to be sure they knew!

If you plan to have a decorative base trim at the bottom....get the 12" deep bases and ask for flush toekick. Your installers will thank you. (see photo below of base trim on shallow cabinets)

If you plan on doing recessed toekick, then building up the toe can make sense. Just check on the price difference. The labor costs to build the toekick diminishes the savings. Ask your KD!

sailaway, the stools are old - 2006-ish - but they may still have them - Pottery Barn Tibetan saddle stools. They are very comfortable (for stools without backs). Frankly, I think the color is all wrong for my cabinets and floor, so I'm either going to replace them or have them re-stained or painted!

Buehl, And, of course I remember you. You have been a far more active participant than I. Even so, this is my first go-to place when contemplating changes to the kitchen. We actually did a small refresh of our kitchen---but it made a huge difference for us. Now we are thinking about downsizing and may build. Don't really know for sure yet, but I'm trying to do my pre-planning now to avoid at least some of the mistakes. DH has drawn up some tentative plans in the event we choose to build new. (He drew up the plans for our current home.) I keep putting more and more sticky notes suggesting slight alterations. Not surprisingly, most of those notes concern the kitchen. We are also considering buying something smaller and renovating, which will probably bring a different set of concerns and questions.

SJHockeyFan, Yes, Pottery Barn does have them---on sale even! Thanks.
