I think the vintage sideboard is Fabulous. Yes, a different mirror would be nice and maybe a bold Color for the Lamps. If you like the base, add a colorful shade. A very large piece of abstract art would look great for the bare wall. Lighting makes all the difference in a room so, yes, replacing the existing with a more modern powerful light fixture would complete the room.

The side board is definitely a keeper!

I am a visual person and I know your dining room doesn't look like this one but your elements could work nicely if you were to copy some elements put together by a designer.

I would move the sideboard to the longer dining room wall.

Put six chairs around your table

Hang an ultra modern white chandelier over your table

Paint the long wall of dining room and living room pure white

Find two clear globe lamp as show on this sideboard. As you have no window I would opt for a very very very large mirror with a think black border; something simple.

If you have pictures of someplace you have been, vacation together, historical buildings that mean something to you, have them reprinted in black and white and mat as shown in the picture and place on the short wall between the kitchen wall. You can find black frames at IKEA or Target or Wal Mart. Plastic is OK as this will be expensive. Hang them 3 inches apart all around. Hang from floor to ceiling. They should take up 2/3 of wall space. Block them out with black paper to see what size works best.

Buy a funky chandelier.

Since this room is all black and white and there is a continuous white wall now, use your painting to select accessories for your living room in lamps, pillows, and some colorful full curtains in a geometric or color block pattern that matches your living room. See curtains and rod below. The room shows a beige sofa but your sofa looks neutral enough it would be just fine. Accents are done in coral and turquoise but you can pull same accents out of your painting in any colors that appeal to you. The black and white window treatments act as a bridge to the living room and dining room relationship.

The sideboard you inherited is great, lucky you! and I would try a whole new perspective with it.

I would float the sideboard in the space where the curio cabinet is, facing the living room. These are the accessories I wold tablescape its top to make it work with both rooms, the bold but classic table lamp picks up the living room accent colors and the brass base coordinates with the handles of the sideboard. A silver decorative platter/bowl and silver/crystal picture frames pick up the dining room chairs silver nailhead accent. I would place on the back of the sideboard a small settee for extra dining seating!

I had a long white wall like yours that I sectioned with pale wall paint to cozy up my space. Your dining wall and alcove (where the sideboard now sits) I would paint a silvery gray (like BEHR gentle rain or reflecting pool), but the undertones of your dining chairs play a factor in color selection, to keep it light, airy but defined and inviting.

Lastly, I would turn the table perpendicular to the long wall; hang a good-sized mirror over the table; silver-toned bowl/centerpiece/ floral to introduce a little color for the eye; and large artwork and/or a serving cart underneath on the alcove wall.

(I would use the curio elsewhere in the house. I used mine as a mini library cabinet in the upstairs hall.)

The only thing is I don't think we can move the sideboard to the other side as we have a sectional sofa in the living room and the space isn't very roomy. I don't think it is very visible in the photos that I posted. I will post a photo of the type of rug we were considering. Please let me know what you think!

Very high contrast! If you use this other things will have to be simple and I think it is a very romantic pattern where as your art work seems somewhat casual. If you love this pattern then maybe the dining room for carpet. It could work but it will be very dramatic, putting it under the DR will obscure it a bit but still inject drama......do one room at a time to establish your design direction, modern, romantic, country etc.
