Area Rugs: Combining, Coordinating...

So I'm starting to think about staging the house for selling in the Spring. We have, what we call, the gallery. It's an 8 x 18 room that functions as the "walkway" from the foyer, through the living room and into a wing of the house. I need a new rug for the gallery.

All of our rugs are antique Persians in varies levels of quality and condition. We have a few ratty ones that DH loves but I'm more than happy to ditch them for new rugs. They really are ugly. I want to replace them with inexpensive rugs and I don't want Persian-style rugs. So I'm thinking about rugs with modern designs but coordinate with my existing rugs.

So I'm asking for opinions in three parts:

1- The current rug is 4.5x11 and fits perfectly. I'm not going to find anything close to that size so I'm thinking about getting two (4x6) of the same rug. Would that look okay? Here is the room:

2- Here is the closest rug in the living room:

Here is a new rug (in the background of the pic next to the washer) that's in the laundry/mud room (visible from the gallery):

Here is a rug I'm considering. Since it is also blue with a sort of similar pattern, would it look okay in the gallery?

3- These are some rugs I'm considering. Preference?

I like what you have. Why spend money on something that isn't needed? A potential buyer's focus is going to be on the actual floor or carpet ... not an accessory.

I agree with CindyMac. I’’d leave well enough alone, and worry about more crucial items. Those rugs look fine to me.

I wouldn't do two rugs, unless you can sew them together well. I think it's impossible to keep them lined up and might be too much in the small space.

I like the one you have now too. Of the ones you posted, I like the one you're considering (upper right) best.

Another option might be to just leave it bare. I don't think you really have to have a rug in that area. Love your house, it's still one of my favorites :-)

I also like what you already have. Everything is interesting and has character. However, I get how you want to add some "in" things to appeal to a certain or larger audience. Could you do that with other types of inexpensive accessories? Or, do you need to? Who are your target buyers? What is the age group?

I'd honestly keep the one you have or you could leave it bare. I think your house is awesome and I would hope people could see past a rug if it wasn't their style.

What you have now seems to suit the style of your home. I am with the "don't change it" camp!

Wow! I adore your rugs and wouldn't change a thing. Everything looks great. If you do get rid of any PLEASE let me know!!!

PS Where did you find your gorgeous rug in the living room?

Sorry, I am also in the "save your money, its perfect as is" camp.

Magdalenalee, where did you get the rug that's in the living room, please? The blue with red. It's very similar to one in my house that I've not been able to find a match to. I think the one you have would work!

You guys are killing me! And thanks for the compliments, I'm going to soarly miss this house.

The picture of the rug makes it look much nicer than it is. It really is ratty and I just have a mind to get rid of it. I found a bunch of pictures on Houzz showing hallways with matching rugs. I
really like the look and think it would work well for this area.

However, I'll sit on the idea awhile longer and see how I feel.

Aktillery & Suzieque, I purchased the living room rug at auction. It's an antique Persian, estimated to be 50 to 75 years old, from Moud in Iran.

I would not do two rugs to replace the 11' runner -- too piece-y.

For me, the only thing that mixes with Persians would be single color Tibetan rugs -- no prints - like those from Stephanie Odegard, which are as or more expensive than the Persians.

I wouldn't worry at all about rugs with staging. I'd be concerned mostly with de-cluttering (which, of course, you've read) and with lightening and brightening the rooms so they all look larger.

No rugs.....prospective buyers will be looking at walls and floor and imagining their furniture in your house. Besides your new rugs would just get soiled from people walking over them when they came to see your house (hopefully many people will come).

I'm on the side of if the rug is ratty, remove it and do not replace. If you're going for a more clean, less cluttered look, removing some rugs will accomplish that.

Although it looks like the rugs are fine...you do not seem to think so. Here are some very inexpensive sales http://www.myhabit.com/#page=b&dept=home&sale=A3KM7996ZJIHWX&pageNum=3&ref=qd_home_sr_3

I love your home. I like the red in the current rug. The new choices are all blue and have a different feel to them.

From just the peak of what we see, your house looks like a winner, as is. I am not sure why you are investing in rugs that will most likely on fit into your new home.

i would concentrate on the structural things. Any nicks, holes, dents, sticky doors etc. Anything need a fresh coat of paint? Anything need to be repaired?

Thank you all once again. I think I've decided to give the rug to my son and not replace it. I'm going to give the stained concrete floor a good polishing and that will be a good place to showcase the floor. Of course, decluttering and repairing are the highest priority.
