Fireplace Mantel Size

We are making a stacked stone fireplace in the living room. The stone will be pretty much be flush with the wall. It may be 3-4" out. We are going to use a reclaimed wood beam as our mantel. With that in mind, what is the ideal depth of the beam? Thank you!

It has alot to do with the overall size of the fireplace, the wider the fireplace, the more massive of a mantle you could use. Could you supply firebox dimensions, as well as overall stone fireplace (height and width) dimensions, maybe a pic?

The height is 6 ft and length is 7 ft. Firebox is approximately 31" x 42 ". We are keeping the dimensions the same as we have very high ceilings and don't want to have it too stout. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of the current monstrosity. It is about to be taken down to begin the new stone work. Thank you!!!

There probably is no ideal depth, go with what fits the size of the room. Nothing overpowering.
