What's behind your range?

I'm in desperate need of some inspiration for the wall behind my 30 inch range. I like the tile but it's a bit wonky. The one long grout line is really bothering me. So to minimize that, without ripping the tile out, I'm feeling like I need something else behind the range. Mirror or artwork or shelf or....

Any ideas? Have you hung anything behind your range?

I had a mirror behind my range for years in my old house. I originally put it up because it was important for feng shui, which I began reading about and trying to follow many years ago.

Our new house has only tiles behind the range, and it feels like something is missing. Even my family has committed that they miss the mirror. One day, I'll again have a mirror behind my stove, it just doesn't seem right not having one there!

My range has an optional stainless steel backsplash with a shelf on top. I wonder if you could do something stainless steel to match the range?

My range has its own 10/12" stainless back. Over it is a hood with warming lights and a SS warming shelf/back splash. I have always known I would not want tile behind a range. I would rather cook than clean and I could predict the headache tile would cause for me. I have a tough enough time reaching the back the range much less would I want to be climbing up to scrub tile. I just wipe it down with a dampened microfiber cloth and I'm done.

I don't care for stainless as a look but after a lot of soul searching I am glad I picked the stainless for the cooking area. The lower part of my range is white, the hood is white and so are the rest of my appliances other than small ones. So I mixed and matched for ease of upkeep.

I have a grout line like that in my tiled shower, which irks me. To correct, I know I'd just have to slide a few tiles up and a few down, and then the eye wouldn't see the rest. Could probably take care of in an hour, but never (and may never!) get around to doing it.

I don't know that you have room for anything to go 'over the tile' - might be worth fixing the line :)

We did a sheet of stainless behind our range but nothing else. I love how easy it is to keep clean.

We continued our tile - installed the hood after-the-fact, so had to add to the tile. Fortunately, it's 4" white squares and our granite diamond pieces were already installed. I absolutely LOVE the ease of cleaning!

It's kind of eclectic; this is before the soapstone was installed. The filligree stuff is a cast iron trivets they had at linens & things back in '06-'07 when I was doing the kitchen.

Our home had a utensil bar hanging above the range. I am usually more of a clean look person, but I added utensils that I use fairly often and they are handy. I wash them in the DW every couple weeks if they don't get used.

Now that I have used it for a couple years, I like the function, but am thinking of changing the back splash and whether I should remove them, but I'm not sure if the area will look empty to me.

Before you do that, why don't you get a gray marker and try to camouflage the grout line? It's noticeable because it is a long line. If you break it up, it won't catch your eye the same way. If you are planning to cover it up anyway, what do you have to lose?

Can you people with the stainless panels tell me what the best type of place to get them is? I'm looking for something similar to put behind a utility sink in an art studio, but it would basically be the same thing. The shelf option might be nice, too. Can you just get it from the metal place in the industrial part of town? How thick should it be? Any other specs regarding the cutting, etc so that it sort of looks finished?

I'm afraid I can't help too much. My husband and friends of our both work in the metal working industry. They gave us this full sheet of heavy gauge stainless and DH took it to work and cut it to size. The edges are finished with this...

I ordered an iron seal (Seal of New Amsterdam) that adorned the West Side Hwy bridge in NYC until it was torn down. Weighs 60lbs. DH and I measured numerous times before he cut into the wall during construction and framed it in. Lots of Liquid Nails.

Featuring the PLJW 108 Series Range Hood · More Info

You can always add a stainless steel shelf underneath to match your range hood. Not only is it nice to have a little bit of extra storage space, but it looks good too.

I like cawaps idea of a gray marker (light gray). Just mimic the tiles in a couple of areas to break up the white line. It looks broken already in a few areas. Don't do too many, maybe 3 or 4. Then live with it for a day or two and decide if you need more or it doesn't work. Maybe a washable paint for a first try and test in a small spot.

Thanks everyone. I may try the marker trick and see if that helps. That wonky line is really bugging me. The mirror sounds like a good idea. I like the shelf too..

I think the Sharpie trick is such a good idea. I only really notice the part behind the kettle and the right rear burner. A little judicious dabbing here and there should disguise it really well. I have a seam in my Caesarstone right through the middle of the sink. It's short and sweet and with a dab of Sharpie every 6 months or so, I can't even see it.

Debbie, I love the 4 inch tile with the black accents. Subway tile is nice, but the 4 inch is underrated and deserves more respect. Nice job! Classic.

My travertine tile is only about 14" up, and i've used a large wire plate hanger, and hung a SS(plated)rectangular tray. I've carried the SS to the counter space on one side of the rangetop, with another gallery style SS tray which holds a small lamp made out of an antique tea pop, and a SS pitcher holding antique SS utensils. Also on the tray is a pair of cut glass salt/pepper shakers w/SS tops, and a cut glass lidded butter dish. And yes, I use everything!

Cluelessincolorado, I'm still in disbelief that the lid has not gotten broken! But everyone knows not to sit grandchildren on that end to put their shoes on and DH knows to be careful when replacing the roll. I would love another one for the laundry room, but can't justify it in my mind. Maybe one day!

I can't quite tell if this would look good, but we have one of these.

So thanks for all of the great ideas. I loved allison0704's seal of new amsterdam, so I looked far and wide for something that would give me a similar look. It took awhile but I finally found this tea tray at the World Market. I think it looks good. I don't notice the wonky grout lines at all now.

    Super cute!

I too was feeling like I needed something behind my range. I ordered this large copper piece from Belgium on Etsy. I had photo edited it in to my space. However, it now looks as if the piece is much darker than what the seller posted. I am sure I will figure out what to do to make it work.

aktillery9 - that looks awesome. You said it's copper? Is it patina-ed because it doesn't look coppery? Is that the photo edited picture?

Yes it is edited. The seller sent me other photographs upon asking and the copper is really more of a darker copper. We will see when it arrives what I might do with it.

Interesting piece! Look forward to seeing what it looks like once you receive.
