The Shepherdess

last modified: 11 years ago

Got some nice pictures of The Shepherdess this afternoon and thought them worth sharing. This is my first rose, which I bought bare root last year. I'm so happy with it, and it smells amazing! To think it was so tiny three months ago that I had it tied to that trellis so the wind wouldn't knock it over.

Bare roots are amazing. From an old piece of wood to an incredible, large plant with fabulous blooms. Well done. What are you planning for your next rose bush?

Thanks! I'm currently debating on purchasing Eden, despite being a climber and so late in the year. All of my plants must be container grown, as I'm in a second story apartment, so I'm a bit nervous about buying it.

Here's picture of the Shepherdess a year ago, compared to today.

I hear ya! I'm on the 4th floor and everything is in containers. They might not last as long or grow as big but I'm just happy to have flowers:) Your rose look very pretty.

I think any plant can be grown in a container, so long as it's big enough. My dad has fig trees in containers, and those suckers are massive! They're in the same size pot as my Benjamin Britten and are extremely healthy. I also noticed that I have much better control over water and my roses seem healthier for it. Earlier this summer a lot of roses in my area drowned and rotted from all the rain and I avoided that issue because of the drainage in my pots.

P.S. lemme see some pics of your container roses!

Two years ago I lost 4 rose bushes because I planted them in water-saving containers, thinking it would be nice not to water so often in the summer. Of course, that March was the rainiest ever in Seattle (which is saying something!) I got rid of them and now use the biggest containers I can find and drill extra holes in them. Another bonus is no weeding:) I put up some pix this morning in the rose gallery.

I do the same! Tons of holes and a lot of rocks at the bottom. I put about 4-5 inches of mulch on the top of my potting soil and that has really cut down on the watering! And it looks prettier than just dirt, in my opinion.

Lovely. She looks creamy ivory in the top pictures. Is that true in real life? TIA

The color is pretty spot on. It was pinker last year though.

Its amazing how they grow so fast and give us such beautiful roses. I love how you posed It on the tree stump. Such pretty photography. Judy
