It looks great to me, but I would suggest a few things. First, the rug under the breakfast table is too small. Rugs under dining tables should be 4' longer and wider than the table to allow for chair sit and scoot space. You can see how the chairs are falling off of the rug even when not in use. If the items under that window cannot be moved and a large enough rug will bump the wall ,you have two choices. Do without a rug there, or get the right size and swag the light fixture out to hang above the table. The rug at the formal dining table may even be too large, and I can't see one in the seating area. Have you tried the dining rug under the sofas? Color will be your key. You seem to be stuck in neutral, except for the orange/red in the kitchen area. Warm up with gold, orange, russet. Your lights may be part of the problem. CFL's often shed cold light. Be sure you have correct warmth there. I like LED cans a lot myself. You might take a tutorial on styling shelves and mantels here at Houzz. I think you could get more impact from the built-ins. Consider painting that focal wall and the backs of the shelf systems in a warm color from the palette above, and change the round table cloth to a patterned one with the colors you select for your "warm-up!"

OK I see alot of brown...brown tones...The big rug could have more color in it..the brown valances are making the room more brown. The brown units on the sides fireplace would look better white or dark brown like the ceiling rafters. The lamps are brown...more variation in tones is needed throughout. The wall color is very close to the brick color/not enough contrast. You do have a very nice place..a few things could spruce it up.

I agree with Darzy, too many small details are unsettling: Large spaces require large scale art. Decoenthusiaste and Jayme are also right about colour: good harmony, but it lacks tension. Make it more dynamic with some bright red, and some San Jose blue 741 from Benjamin Moore in some of your fabrics, or maybe even a lighter version of that blue on the ceiling between the beams. Black details also help to ground the space, but I think you alrady have enough black. Overall, it is a beautiful decor. Well done!

Your home is lovely. I do see a lot of brown in the family room. To brighten it up I would put different pillows on the couch and chairs... Decide what color you would like to bring into the room, bring a bunch of pillows home and play with it...

If I may weigh in, you've got lots of great advice up there. Everyone is correct.
Here's a shot of your room with the shelves cleared, as best as it could be done, and a couple of larger pieces put in. You can take your cure from there.

Then, I could be very off base, but I think it would be nice to use a colour block on the recessed walls beside the fireplace above the book cases. Perhaps the gold of the drapery panels. It seems to give you more height. Use larger pieces up there as well.

wow, this is a nice home - pretty warm already. But lots of brown tones, as someone else has observed. So use pillows and art for some color, and something really fun would be to use different colored frames with family/friends pictures at different places. Also, I dont' know if this would warm it up, but I also have a cathedral ceiling and painted the beams the same color as the ceiling. What a difference! It makes your room (not the ceiling) a focal point.
also, take some of the stuff off shelves for a cleaner look. And I think someone mentioned bigger rug in the kitchen. Try an Oriental rug (a real one, not one from Lowes or Pottery Barn) - that will warm up the space, add interest and last forever!

Love your home. How about replacing the white pendants with more colorful pendants, red and orange glass comes to mind. The room is very masculine and brown, love browns but they need some cream, red and orange cushions on the sofa with soft textured throws, nubby and warm and feminine.

Wow I love all the ideals ya'll have me all excited ready to try things new. I know someone gave the ideal to move the rug under the dining room table to the sitting area if I do that what ideals do you have for under the table then. I would love ideals on the sitting area furniture leave as is or rearrange?? Also round table with burlap cover what are ideals for that just a color cloth or other suggestions. I do think I will change the window coverings in the kitchen to something with color should I leave the shades under the valances now or do away ideals also two back windows one on side of table and then door all the same or different? I really appreciate all your help ya'll are amazing and I feel like I am getting out of the same old needed that badly. Thanks for all your comments keep them coming. This is the first time we've seen the rug for the sitting area. Maybe just switch them. As long as you have 2' of rug extending past the table top on all sides you're ok. This looks to be sisal with the cowhide layered over it. I do think the dining rug has more interest to it for your sitting area. Would this one work in the breakfast area or is it way too big? I see a few hints of orange - candle, pillow. Would you want to try a cloth in that color to replace the burlap? Once you decide on an accent color for the focal wall, you'll have a better direction for smaller accessories, fabrics and a new rug for under one of the tables. You can pull the same accent color to the window treatments in the kitchen. Personally, I'd prefer stationery panels flanking each window, or if you're daring, cowhide valences!

Try an old world plaster type finish..this is a library I did with that technique..very warm and interesting. Will make your stone work pop out more and have more of an impact.
