How to save okra seeds successfully

I've been trying to save okra seeds for several years now, but no success. I have only open pollinated, organic heirloom varieties, and no one near me is growing any. I am able to save nearly every other kind of veggie seed, but not these. What happens is I wait for the pods to dry on the plant, then open the dry pod and remove the seeds. The seeds always are a dark, blackish color, and won't ever sprout, unlike the ones from the packets that are a nice olive greenish color. What could be wrong? I've tried different organic suppliers, with the same bad result. They are clemson spineless.
