Please help decorate this wall

Some of you may remember my family room. Well, there's been no progress and I have company coming late next week, which made me finally start to think about what to do with all the bare space on the walls.

My style is transitional and while my goal was a serene palette, the overall effect when looking in this direction is blah.

This is from a while ago. The wall in question is the one over the sofa.

I made a trip to Home Goods today in search of something to go over the sofa and brought home this behemoth:

I don't mind it, but don't think it goes with the rest of the room. (Please ignore messy yard - have just re-seeded outside).

What I do love is the darkness of it and how much space it takes up. (Or maybe just how much space it takes up).

Oh decorating gurus, what would you suggest over this sofa? (Feel free to offer suggestions on anything else, too).

To save time - the sofas and rug, stay, and cannot be moved.

I mentioned this in another thread.....greatbigcanvas.com. You can shop by style, color, etc.. Everything comes in numerous different size options. You can get canvas or print, framed or unframed. The only downside is the only frames offered are black, straight, more contemporary looking, but you can always buy unframed and have it framed yourself. I've been happy with several pieces I have ordered from them. I think right now everything is 50% off.

I like the flag piece, but like you said, it's big and dark, and I think that makes it too visually heavy for the rest of the room.

I can never afford the kind of paintings I like in huge sizes, so I tend to go with other types of art. I think a map or a mirror would look nice in that spot. I map in color would pick up the colors of the books in those shelves I love! I would also replace the light wood coffee table with a large ottoman, or two small square ottomans. You can add a tray so you have a surface for drinks.

I love that flag above your sofa!!

I also love the flag. It reminds me of Jasper Johns, and I think its big, colorful graphic is just what your room needs. And it balances nicely the look of your handsome bookcases.

I love your wall of bookcases and windows! I think something light - maybe even all white- would bring more continuity to your room. Have you thought about doing something yourself? Some amazingly beautiful and inexpensive things can be done with stuff as simple as scrap book paper.

Oldbat2be, (btw, your call name is the best!) your kitchen is one of my favorites!

Wondered, do you still have the white painted coffee table from the first picture? I liked it. :-)

Its really hard to run out and find the perfect piece when you are on a deadline. If you really want to hang something before your guests come you may have to accept that whatever you put there is temporary.

I like the size of the piece you purchased but it seems a little dark, I think balancing the darkness with some darker throw pillows would work.

Do you love it though? I am not sure whether you love it or whether you brought it home because it was the item that was the right size that you liked the most. I want you to hang something you love. Your house is so full of thoughtful choices, and this one is feeling a bit incongruous to me.

First, I LOVE your room. The windows flanked by those bookcases are just gorgeous. I think the size of the picture is what is needed, but, as others mentioned, you might want to add some navy objects to bring some of that color in and tie it together. A throw perhaps, a sailboat, something to carry over that color. Even some pillows. I also don't get the feeling that you love it. When I needed something over my sofa it took a while but I did fall in love with the print. Since it's so big, so visible, you need to love it because it anchors the room.

I like the size, but not the darkness of the flag art. It's hard to pick art for anyone else so I can't really be specific. But if it's something large you need, you might look at hanging a rug on the wall. Sometime the colors and textures can really work.

I know you said not to move the sofa, but I'm curious to see what it'd looked like if it was angled in the corner with the floor lamp behind it...seems not conducive to conversation with the love seat and it seems cramped to the doorway with the end table on the other side. Esp since, I believe, the FP is angled as well...I liked the white chest there, but in the later pics, it's been changed for the light maple. I like the idea of the softness ottomans would bring too.

The lamp that is there on the small table is too short and adding to that feeling of a cramped corner as the shade is almost touching the sofa. A taller lamp would help furnish the wall space and light the art, whatever you choose.

If you're not interested in driving yourself crazy looking for art and adding more color to the room with pillows, throws, accessories, get a large mirror to hang over the sofa and call it a day.

    1. Agree the proposed flag artwork is too dark, but also believe it is inconsistent with the room with respect to style and subject.

    2. placement of the two sofas make them look mad at each other---too separated for conversations. Can you put the sofa under the window directly across from the one in question? Leave cocktail table between them.

    3. Preferred white chunky cocktail table in first photo; fresh and pretty and picked up on the white woodwork very nicely.

    4. Nice canvas in blues and greens over the sofa? Or three large photos matted in white and framed in a light ash color? If the sofa opposite (if such placement is possible) also backs to a wall you could do a related canvas or three photos above it.

    5. You need some lamps on end tables.

    6. If sofa under window is moved, two chairs and a small table between, in a contracting/complementing color and/or print would look great under that window.

i know you only asked for something for that wall, but its difficult to consider the wall out of the context of the entire room.

Joaniepoanie - thank you for the recommendation for greatbigcanvas (and curse you!). Two hours of browsing later... I have not found anything I love but slowly I started to realize that the picture should have meaning, and that helped a lot. Then, I made a jump over to DB's website (lots of pictures of the mountains and areas I love). This one, I liked particularly. I like the lightness of the colors and composition (offset). It works with the kablelights.

jlc712 - We have a giant floor to ceiling world map in the next room, so I will probably eschew them in here. Still, here's a shot at your first suggestion (have no idea of scale). Not bad! The coffee table can definitely go, it's ancient.

    Wood world map:

The room is oddly shaped - and currently, a mirror would only reflect a tv and more blue.

stolenidentity, sableincal - What I like most about the flag is that it looks like there's a zombie towards the right side of it ... huge Walking Dead fan here:)

starnold - great link!! I may use for another project. I have decouppaged outlet covers and loved the results and have plans for the trash can you see on the left.

k9arlene - Yes, definitely need accessories! (I never do this). Coffee table could definitely be painted or banished back to the attic. The goal was serene but which could be livened up with pops of color.

Another old picture, but it shows the right side of the room. TV will probably end up mounted on wall in current location or above fireplace. (Not shown).

Rebunky - thanks! And you're too polite:) I'm not sure which table is worse, can easily paint or pitch them all.

Localeater - you hit the nail on the head. I don't love the piece. I'm glad you like the size, I do too. Throw pillows are an easy change.

decormyhomepls - Interesting, you make the second mention of navy. This is not a color I've thought of before for this room. I will keep that in mind. And yes, I DO want to fall in love with the print:)

Thanks for the picture showing your television. You may want to move the sofa in question closer to the wall and move the end table with to the other side nearest the doorway. Then art can be centered on sofa and not be too close to the door molding .

I like the softness of the colors in the snow scene...somehow the dark seems stark. I agree it should not be chosen just to get something up there, but it should be something you love that has meaning for you.

annie - Using a rug is a great idea! I'm not loving the colors of this one, but definitely appreciate the idea. Yes to the taller lamp! We did wire for sconces behind the sofa but then they become something else to compete with the cable lighting above.

Angled... just not enough space on the left wall (not deep enough). Sofa is 36", wall from corner to door is 51", including trim. Then, there's also no room for the table. (But it does feel cozier!)

The colors look true, here, by the way, in this next picture:

kswl - So glad you chimed in. Love the options/ideas, please keep them coming!

Yes, the picture is inconsistent with the style. It's not staying. The built ins were designed around that sofa, and I love it there. It's staying! I picked out both sofas for this room, so they're sized for their current places. White cocktail table will go back:) Thank you for the photo ideas. Blues and greens are the foundation of the room. I only have room for one end table for the wall sofa - can consider a taller lamp here. The current aqua -while I love the lamp - is not right.

The window sofa is 82" and the wall area across from the wall sofa is only 70" (due to angled fireplace).

kswl - I'll try that when I can get DS off of the sofa. The problem then becomes that the coffee table moves along with the sofa and is closer to the door. Any ottoman placed here, has to be fairly narrow.

Instead of a coffee table in front of the longer sofa, how about two small ottomans/martini tables spread out to reduce the weightiness of a coffee table. Then you wouldn't have a need for an end table, could center the sofa on the wall and have a floor lamp behind it.

Oh, I like the angle as it softens the whole arrangement. The coffee table needs to go though as, given the location of the doorway, it feels like a real shin-banger. If you had softer upholstered ottomans there, especially round ones, it would "feel" a lot better. Also the end table is making it too crammed...I'd look at a martini table as aktillery is hunting...or even using one of the ceramic chinese garden seats as an alternative. I agree, the colors in that rug are dark.
