Note under my car's windshield wipers -- off topic

There's been a small piece of paper riding around under the windshield wipers for several days and I keep forgetting to remove it. When I did so today I found the nicest note written on the back of a receipt. It said:

"I'm sorry I got your parking place. Didn't realize until too late."

I vaugely remember going around a line a parked cars to get to a parking place I'd spotted on the other side, but someone beat me to it. It didn't bother me in the least, but thought it was so kind for someone to take time to write a note.

Have you ever left a note of apology and received one like this?

I hope the person realizes that I appreciate the gesture and held no ill will in the first place. There are many kind people in the world.

I only think of a parking space as mine if I am parked in it. I am aware that most people do not cut me off on purpose and I was most likely in their blind spot.

I grew up in a town where parking was at a huge scarcity and it was a game of the quick witted and the lucky. We circled blocks for hours like sharks waiting for the emptiness for the quick attack. We were lucky if we got a parking spot 10 blocks from home . My mother had one of those rare center city carriage houses and, most often, the front of the garage door was blocked by a car even though it was clearly marked.

I am usually that brainless fast moving rat that gets the parking spot, but I am blissfully unaware that I took it from anyone. It is my defense mechanism that allows me to see myself as a good human and not selfish.. I think that is the long latent northeastern center city person whose instincts never die no mater how long I have lived away (almost 45 years).

I believe most people who take 'our' parking places, or cut us off in traffic, etc. are 'blissfully unaware'. The kind thing for us to do when that occurs is to be blissfully un-ticked off. Also helps in keeping the blood pressure down -- that's for sure ... :-)

I've never gotten a note of any kind on my windshield, unless you count parking tickets or ads. Speaking of parking 'sharks', the rule at UTSA years ago was that if a driver was the first one to put on his/her turn signal after spotting a parking space, that gave the driver dibs on the space. But like any unofficial rule, not everyone followed that.

That is nice Ragna. Sometime it is best not to notice that someone has taken your intended parking spot. One less stress driving now with having to watch out for people still texting, driving and veering in your lane.

Mamachile, I like the term 'intended' parking spot, rather than 'my' parking spot. Probably part of the concern of the note writer is that I'm obviously not a spring chicken anymore even though, thanks to daily activity in the yard, I still get around very well. But when I'm tired it's really nice when someone hands me their shopping cart saving me me walking 50 ft to get one, or helps me with loading heavy stuff into my car even though I sometimes have to ask. It seems many younger people are not aware that young women with kids or old women with arthritis might really appreciate a little help. Oh well, be that as it may the neat thing is when we are kind to one another it makes us feel good! .... :-)
