It largely depends on your countries laws concerning the importation of plant material. There are hundreds of varieties of garlic... probably more like thousands, that are available in other countries. If you can find other varieties at farmer's markets or other food stores, you can grow it. Other than that, you will have to find a company that can ship to you.

There gotta be Boers around who grow knoffel (Afrikaans for garlic). Garlic is a traditional crop here in the US for a number of the German and Dutch traditional farmers like the Amish. Gotta be some Boers who brought some along when they settled, originally coming from very similar traditions. Those with Huguenot ancestry would almost certainly have brought some garlic out of France with them, one would think. If you have heritage farms like we do in the US, check with them for traditional crops. If there are cottage gardeners around, some of them may have garlic they will share with you. All of these will be SA adapted which may not be something that imported seed stock will be.
