Large Palm Houseplant not doing well

Hey there!

Looking for help to keep my large palm alive (I think it's a palm?). The previous tenant left it here and it's health has been on the decline since I arrived. I can't get in touch with that person. The only info I have (from my landlord) is to water daily, he thinks...

Seemed to be excessive to me, so I was only watering it about a quart of water daily or every other day. After 1-2 weeks, it looked worse. I am now watering it half a gallon daily and it looks like it's hanging in there, but not thriving. It's leaning more to one side, and it was definitely not doing that when I got here. Does anybody have any good suggestions for how much water and how frequently to water this plant?

So right now, it's been leaning on one side. The bottom portion is sagging, looking dry, weak and the tips are turning brown. Higher up, the leaves look much healthier. There seems to be new growth as well.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

It's about 8-9 feet tall. Gets plenty of sun. I don't know how old it is, but it was looking extremely healthy when I first arrived.
