Not a palm, it's a Bird of Paradise, Strelitzia species. If it's the Strelitzia reginae that's around maximum size. If it's Strelitzia nicolai that's still a small plant and will try to grow through your ceiling. Looking at your photo I suspect it might be the nicolai.

They're a mediterranean climate plant, wet cold winter and dry hot summer. So watering would depend on time of year, what type of soil it's in and how good the drainage is. There's no real magic formula that can tell you to give it "X" amount of water every "Y" number of days. You have to check the moisture in the pot to see if it's dry enough to water.

It'll be leaning towards the light so you'd need to turn it regularly to get it more even. Mineral salts can build up in pots, from town water or fertiliser. That can cause browning of the leaf tips. It might need a good flushing with clean water, or even repotting.

Outside in heat and full sun, mine get hosed down daily. Inside, probably a couple times a week depending on the temps and sun.

Pure speculation but,my detective skills think he might have had it outdoors,in shade..and brought it in for show...and just left.

I doubt one small window could get it to do that well,and when you said it's starting to lean to the light, I think "It was outside previously and oriented".

If you are in a cold climate? He might have just bought it days or weeks before from a nursery/greenhouse.

If your in Los Angeles,and you place it back outside? It will need a bigger pot. Only put it in shade. Sun now,would burn it badly.
