August update - still going strong.

last modified: 11 years ago

I got re-acquainted with my garden Sunday morning after being away for a week. Some of the more tender hostas sustained some bug and slug/snail bites but the potted ones fared better.

A few highlights...pics taken around 9:30 a.m. Sunday, August 23/15.

Striptease

Rainforest Sunrise from July, then the recent shot on Sunday

last year I gave it a lot more sun - the centre was a brilliant yellow.

Lakeside Shore Master

Rascal on Left, Wide Brim in foreground, a young-but-fast-growing Frances Williams division to the right. (I thought I could buy another year but growing too quickly...need to be moved.)

U. Erromena - I clipped lower leaves with lawn mower :(

Sounds impossible, but evidently those are chew marks on Rhino Hide!

not a mark on Revolution! Pretty seed pods.

Paul's Glory - this one is always interesting...different sized leaves, colours, some transition on lower right leaf (looks like trouble but not).

Goodness Gracious sure can take sun well! Even the lighter margins appeal to me. I placed it in more sun in the front to see if it could withstand so much exposure. Passed with flying colours!

I agree with your title! They are all looking good. A bunch of healthy, happy hostas! Whomever you left in charge while you were gone, certainly didn't let you down!

Enjoy your plants for the time remaining before the onset of fall.

    BC

PS You added some more before I submitted. Are these really August pics? Could be May or June, they look so nice!

They all look beautiful, thanks for sharing.

(can't figure out what I did to put font in italics but wish I knew for future use, lol, on ipad typing in the dark while watching Fallon)

Now the time posted is wrong...it is actually 10:42 pm.

Thank you, BC! No one was looking after the lawn or gardens, much less my pots. Thank goodness it rained in between! I watered well before my departure.

Yes, these were all taken on Sunday morning...hard to believe, I know! That's why I'm posting. I didn't know what to expect - we had rain in Toronto, and at home too while I was gone - slugs went unchecked....no one around to spread bait. I didn't bother to clean dried flowers off, or cut dried scrapes, I just took pic after pic, I was so excited to see them so perky!

    Plantaginea

    Brother Stefan

Francee - green and white...but a clean, crisp pretty hosta.

    Dark Star

some of the potted ones under the tree - as of Sunday.

Deb, you up late too, lol? Trusty iPad, eh? Your finger must have slipped on the slanted I by accident...see it under the word "slanted" that I typed? It is boxed in, in the pic below. So next time you want italics, touch the I, then touch it again to cancel the feature, after you're done typing the words you want italicized. The box around the I will appear thinner, indicating it was turned off. Same goes for bold feature to the left of it.

i don't know what causes the time to go wonky either. Apple thing? Strange. Happens to me a lot. Time zone?

anyway, thank you for looking at my pics! Fallon and Forum = a great combo! Lol

Swirls is now flowering and the two prominent centre leaves are the brightest this hosta has ever displayed! You can really see the streaks clearly - the rest of the plant has more muted streaks...which are more prominent earlier in the season.

So helpful of the rain to show its face when it was needed!

We're still badly in need of more of the wet stuff - needless to say, there's lots of sun in the forecast, but that could change over the weekend. Not so good for vacationers, but we've been so dry for so long.

By the way, that's a super perky bunch huddled under your tree.

Thanks for posting all of these fabulous shots. Hard to pick favorites but Revolution is stunning. I love any hosta with a lot of white. Hard to believe something munched on Rhino Hide. It's not difficult to understand how it got its name.

    Well done!

All your plants look great, wish I had some that looked as good.

Had an awful summer? here. Very wet, variable temperatures day and night and now it's more like end of September. Everything is showing signs of shutting down ready for winter, temperature today in the mid 50's.

Looking back I was posting pictures of emerging plants in mid April so perhaps things have run their course for this year.

Thanks for the lesson Jo! I see that italics button and that was actually early for me! It was in the 60's here yesterday. I don't like temps in the 80's, but 60 in August is not good! These pictures of your beautiful hostas should be added to the library, they look great!!

BC, it was so dry here in July it's a wonder the lawn survived! Most of us around this neighbourhood rely on rain for lawns and don't waste water on such...but our gardens - well, that's another story! I hope you'll get some relief soon.

Steve, thank you! This is Revolution's finest performance year. (last year I fried some leaves moving it around) It is still displaying some creamy centres...as it does when it emerges and before it goes white. I finally found the ideal growing spot for it on the west side of the house where it only gets sun from around three o'clock onwards. I always get this "aaahhhh" moment when it hits me my hosta is extremely happy. You should see my Ann Kulpa! She has no idea she's supposed to look ratty by now, lol.

Dave, I hear you. A lot of us have experienced some weird weather on and off and I thought for sure my hostas were going to decline rapidly after a few cooler nights. You did have such an early start compared to me but your gorgeous pictures kept me going while I was waiting for mine to appear! I couldn't get enough of them! You have some amazing photos for the upcoming Alphabet in December!!!

Deb, thank you for the compliment - I appreciate it. I'm glad you enjoyed the photos!

No wonder you were excited - every one looks fabulous! WOW!!!

Clearly you left for the week with them looking great and the weather cooperated. Bonus!

I love them all but Swirls and Rascal are so nice. I enjoy the subtle colouring of some hostas, Frosted Mini Hearts is very subtle and I quite like it.

I can't wait to find a spot for my Rascal, it has been in a holding pattern for much too long.

    Such a great display Jo!

Thank you, Laurie! Rascal is going to impress, year after year, I just know it! Wonderful substance. It seems to like it where it is growing on west side of house. An easy-going plant - not a water hog at all. The vendor I bought it from had hers growing on east side - both exposures result in same look of the plant. Glad you have one! Now I'm going to google the FMH you mentioned! :-)

Better photo of BS taken today. NHL, it was your original photo of Brother Stefan that prompted me to get one...even though it took me a year!

Thank you, NHL, Stephanie and Mbug for the kind words. :-)

    Beautiful Brother Stefan!

Looking great!!! My BS is completely white in the center and it'll burn soon. Absolutely going to move it to a better spot before the month is up. Been doing a lot of rearraging in the beds. Decided to break up the fragrant bed, as much as I like it. Moved Cerveza and Stained Glass today. Stained Glass was getting buried by some much taller plants, so I moved it to a more easily-viewed spot in the front of a bed, next to Olive Bailey Langdon.

    Cheers, Jo! : )

P.S. I don't care if Francee is just a green and white, it's a beautiful, durable hosta that looks better and better the older it gets. All-time great hosta. It's right up there with Halcyon, in my opinion.

Great looking hostas, Jo! Your pic of So Sweet makes it look kind of velvety. What a cute Candy Dish, so glossy with the subtle waves. I'm amazed your Brother Stefan gets so white in the center, and no burning. It's nice to see such happy hostas. :-)

Thanks, Don! I'm excited to see how your fragrant bed looks now. It looked beautiful as it was but the Stained Glass hosta deserves to be seen, you're right to showcase it. I am so impressed with my little bare-root one so far! Maybe we'll see some pics sometime of all the re-locations? ;-)

I am so crowded here. The upside of that is no weeds, of course but I don't get to see their form as much when they are all squished sardine-like", lol. Challenges are good - no room for boredom!

Count me in into that fan-club! Francee and Halcyon are jewels! I owned a Halcyon back in the 80's ... June's blues are now "Halcyon's" in my garden.

NHL, I wanted you to see the better picture of BS because there was some yellow still evident in the centre and makes that hosta stand out. I really love the "peaches and cream" (like the corn) complexion as it starts to develop. From emergence to dormancy, Brother Stefan packs a wallop when it comes to transition! I am thrilled with it so much - I don't know how it can top this year's performance!

Sandyslopes, thank you! I'm glad you found some interest in my photos! So Sweet always makes me stop and stare. I have Bkay to thank for that one! (Just looked at it again, lol). Something clicked when I read your comment re BS. I know exactly where he'll be planted now!! Thanks!!!

Well girl - I'm am JEALOUS!!

Wow - they all look so fresh!

Where is the insect damage? Where is the damage from those crazy cold nights we had in the spring? No fair!

Whatever you are doing - keep it up!

Ha, ha, I'm loving the comments! You all heard Paula/Ilovetogrow from Florida say very early this year... "it's going to be a great hosta year"! I repeated this to my hostas --- most of them sat up, took notice, and behaved in kind! LOL

thought I'd add this Zebra Stripes which is new this year. I left the fasciated scape alone because it looks so unusual, then another flowerscape developed, normal-looking. It produced one pod, lol. The transitional colours actually look interesting at this time of year. I was expecting it to almost fully green up but it hasn't happened yet.

So many hostas in one place, must be heaven! I love your goodness gracious! Mine is new this year and in quite a bit of sun in the afternoon but it hasn't turned light like yours. Maybe next year! BS also looks very handsome!

It's not fair, the Alabama sun and August temps have not been so kind to my plants. "It's going to be a great Hosta year " will be something I say to hosta next spring

"I don't know how it can top this year's performance!" (re Brother Stefan).

Next year, same hosta, same colors, BIGGER size! I think you can do it!

Thank you, MK! GG is new for me also! I'm curious as to what the pips look like in the spring and the colour of the unfurling leaves. It'll be fun to compare notes, MK!

Dedez, you've certainly got a challenging climate in Alabama for hostas. Hats off to you for being able to grow them! I sure envy you the longer growing season though.

NHL, that is surely something to look forward to! :)
