Hi, If the mini is a phalaenopsis orchid it won't hurt to re-pot it even if it is in bloom. As you stated the sphagnum moss is not a good thing for Orchids. I have bought several orchids at Lowe's myself and I always re-pot them immediately, due to them being in sphagnum moss. If it fits in the same pot use it, but you can always use any other pot that is the same size or a little bit larger. I hope this helps, Rich.

Thanks Rich. It does help. It is a mini phal. I got lucky-Lowe's got a shipment of orchids yesterday and had to put last week's stock on clearance. Nothing wrong with them at all (they didn't have a chance to destroy them yet). I picked up a few beauties. What do you plant your minis in? My phal mix looks like the pieces are too big for a mini. I'm not sure about using it.

You are welcome, there are different grades of bark that you can buy, not sure where to get them. I have found them randomly at places like Lowe's and Menard's. Sometimes they have the larger grade sometimes the smaller kind. The smaller grade works well for minis. If you can't find a smaller grade maybe try breaking up the larger pieces if you can. Maybe with a hammer?

I disagree. I have repotted a few Phals - minis too - in bloom and always lose most, if not all, the blooms and buds. I agree that spagh doesn't typically work as a medium but if you water sparingly, it will work until it's done blooming. You don't want to shock it while in bloom if the blooms are important to you.

Oh boy. Differing opinions! I could wait to repot - just afraid I am going to over water. I have done this in the past. I am going to look online for a smaller grade orchid mix, Can anyone recommend a vendor? Thanks!

Well, you are always going to get differing opinions based on experiences. Unlike suzabanana, re-potting when I get them home, has never resulted in blossom drop for me. In addition, I have read other on-line sources which have stated that phals in particular don't seem to be affected by re-potting when they are in bloom.
