I have two different maypop vines that are next to each other on a chain link fence. They are both in their second year and both years I have never gotten any fruit. I get a lot of self fertilized fruit pods that are empty, the problem that I am having is that every time I cross pollinate my maypops the vine that has the pollinated flower buds on it dies? Has anybody else ever noticed this? The plant seems to be very healthy and then after hand pollinating it, literally within hours the leaves begin to wilt and the vine is dead in a few days. What could be causing this? It is very quick and it is only on the part of the plant that has the pollinated flower on it. The other vines keep on going until they get pollinated and then do the same thing. I have a hunch it is due to the plant being weak and it can't handle the extra burden of making fruit? There has been some crown gall on blackberries next to it even though I have never seen it on the maypops, I wonder if this can be a factor?
