You have two small bulbs there plus roots - there is an excellent possibility these will grow into full sized plants. I would separate carefully so that each bulb has some roots attached and pot up now to store over winter. Lily bulbs do not store well out of the ground so they need to be potted asap. Keep somewhere protected but cold - a garage, unheated basement, etc. Plant out when soil warms in spring. I'd suggest planting directly in the ground now but too many things can happen to baby bulbs over winter

Do they need -light- during the winter? I can put them in my shed for the winter (as I do fuschias) but there it's pitch black. Is that OK?

No light is fine. Lily bulbs are dormant (not growing) during the winter months. Bring them out into the light and warmth (or plant in the ground) when you would with the fuchsia.

But how to keep the chipmunks from digging them out? I have chipmunks even if I put them in my barn for the winter. Do you think putting old onions on top of the dirt would help?

put a wire mesh cap on the pots ...also known as squirrel defenders.
