Floor boards - wide or narrow?

I am putting down tile in my hurricane ravaged basement in Hoboken. I am putting down a medium grey wood-like tile with "planks" that are 36". I am trying to give the place a more modern/metropolitan feel than a country feel. Does anyone have feelings as to which would look better - the wide 9 inch planks or the narrower 5 inch planks?
