SoCal rooted plant sale

The Southern California Plumeria Society is having it's rooted plant sale this weekend at Balboa Park in San Diego. Always wanted to go and never have or will.....too much traffic on a holiday weekend and too dangerous after you look at the list of what is for sale. They have it on their site...WOW!!!!! Good luck to all of you who go and know that a lot of the helper volunteers get the good stuff before the doors open... :-)))) roxanne

Vendors and volunteers get first pick. Argh. I'm actually stalking 2 plants. I think I jinxed myself my naming the varieties in another thread. Maybe I'll just place an online order for one or two from Brad.

Depending on the plant, more than one vendor might have them (and they might have more than one). I really wanted a Kaleinani last year, and ended up talking to Mike Atkinson the week before the sale - he told me he would have 3 on hand. I think all 3 were still there by the time that I got in the room, so I ended up with a big plant! When you're in line, they hand out a list with vendor names, varieties carried by each vendor, and each vendor's location in the room, but I don't remember if that information was available (at least the list of who would be bringing what) beforehand.

Sorry, Rox - I missed your message until now. No, my Kaleinani hasn't bloomed yet - I'm hoping maybe next year!! I figure our heat will really give the blooms some color.

I just read that the sale starts at 10am but the line starts forming at 6am. I'm currently nursing a hand injury which would make transporting plants to my car more difficult than normal. I'm going to pass on this event. :(

I hope your hand heal quickly, Keilann !!! Maybe someone would go with you? Just in case you really want to go?

Keilann - I think they have runners who will help you with the plants after you've bought them (they stand with your plants while you bring the car around, and then help you load them in). The hardest part would be carrying the plants around while you're in the room. If you have a small cart or something, though, you can bring that to help.

I decided not to go to the festival. I didn't want to deal with traffic, the parking situation, long lines, and large crowds. That does not mean I didn't buy any plumerias today.

I went to Jungle Jacks in Vista instead! I saw maybe 10 other people shopping this morning. I bought a 2 gallon Desert Sunrise (which I have been wanting for awhile) and 2 grafted desert roses. John wrote up the receipt and gave me the 2 gallon at the 1 gallon price! I tried looking for 4 inch plumeria pots but his employee said they were completely cleaned out by a wholesale order. I saw some bare desert roses in a pile on the back tables. The desert roses had just arrived from Thailand and were fresh out of the box. I don't think John was prepared to sell them yet but I asked and he said I could have them for $7.50 each. I may have gotten first pick! This will be my first time growing desert roses. :)

I remembered there is a Lowes in Vista so I swung by there, too. I found 4 inchers!!! I purchased a 3-tip Mini-Me, 2-tip Dragon Tears, and 2-tip Premium Rainbow.

    Happy, happy!
