Induction Range Recommendations

last modified: 11 years ago

Looking for 30" range recommendations for our complete kitchen remodel.
We currently have electric and have decided on induction for quickness, efficiency & safety.

Currently considering Bosch HIIP054U which is stainless steel and Bertazzoni 30" Professional which can also be painted white. The kitchen will have a paneled fridge and dishwasher. No microwave so the oven is the only exposed large appliance. We've never had a microwave or a warming drawer (so a warming drawer might be a nice feature but it's not something we've come to expect). Our current 30" Whirlpool electric oven has a 4.6 cu ft capacity - I don't remember ever running out of oven space.
We cook homemade meals every day and my wife especially enjoys French / Mediterranean cooking and we use the cooktop much more than the oven (cooktop 7x/week, oven 2-3x/week). In the oven we mostly cook fish and roasted vegetables. We have 3 enameled iron Le Creuset items which will work with induction but we'll have to purchase a new everyday cookware set since our current set will not work.

Here are my perceived pros/cons. Perhaps some of you with real-world experience can tell me if I'm incorrect or shortsighted in my assumptions.

Bertazzoni:

(This photo is gas, but same exterior idea)

My Perceived Bertazzoni Pro's:
- Aesthetics
- Color coordination
- Physical knobs (neither of us like fiddling with digital cooktop controls)
- Free vent promo (which I understand is quite good)

My Perceived Bertazzoni Con's:
- No oven timer. (We use our current built-in timer everyday)
- No warming drawer or storage drawer (we use the storage drawer on our current oven frequently)
- Small oven size (3.4 cu ft) although we typically don't have multiple turkey roasts or bake more than 1 thing at a time.

My Perceived Bosch Pro's:
- Easier to service
- Bigger oven (4.6 cu ft, though we've never filled our current 4.6 cu ft oven)
- Warming drawer
- Timer

My Perceived Bosch Con's:
- It's a large grey box (although the frameless cooktop is nice).
- Digital cooktop controls

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Frigidaire also has an induction range with physical knobs you might want to check out.

I haven't read any user reviews of the Bertazzoni, but I have read positive user reviews of the Bosch.

The Bertazzoni induction range was released in the US this June or July so there probably isn't any reviews of the exact model. However, they have been making induction cooktops and dual-fuel ranges with electric convection ovens for quite some time.

And yes, I'm aware that the analog dial is converted into an electric signal and the range will not function without power. The dial is simply quicker to access and set. Especially with oven gloves. On the other hand, Bertazzoni's lack of a clock/timer/alarm is unfortunate.

It sure does. It's also more than twice the price of both the ranges the OP was considering.

I've been trying to find out more about the Bertazonni, too. I love the look and am with you about the knobs. I don't care so much about oven size or warming drawer, but the lack of timer is a bit of a bother. Another consideration is getting it serviced. Not sure about you, but we live in a small market and I know that even tho there may be someone here to service it now, doesn't guarantee there will be someone in the future. Probably willing to accept most deficiencies just because it so damn handsome.

In the Northeast we have excellent service, and have no qualms selling a bertazzoni. They are well made and have been reliable.

HOWEVER, if you do not have good service, even a reliable product can become a nightmare. That should be something you research first. It may one day become very important!

Thanks Joe, I indeed live in that area.

Overall I like my Bosch induction range and it works very well. I would prefer knobs over the push button. it is kind of slow and pain to just turn the burner off. One nice thing about it is that I just remove the pot and eventually it will turn off. Nothing gets hot when there is no pan on the burner.

On my Bosch cooktop, I just press "off" - not sure how that could be any faster.

but 1 tap to select, and 9 taps to put it on high. 1 tap to turn off (unless other burners are on, then it's 9 taps off). I do like the child lock though, even though we would forget to use it.

Oh, sorry, I have "direct select" power levels. You're right, it would drive me crazy to have to go tap=tap-tap every time.

Are you sure it takes 9 taps to go to high? My Electrolux, after turning the burner on, immediately jumps to high if the + button is pressed and low if the - button is pressed. The only time multiple taps are needed is if you want a moderate power level, and even then you can get around it by holding the button down. The interface is super responsive and easy to use. It doesn't bother me at all.

@JVNA Solution What Induction range did you choose in the end? I am in the thick of this now - I love the Berta look, but the reviews on this forum are so horrendous that I am worried about being wooed by the aesthetic! Any chance you chose that one?

I installed a Bosch NITP668SUC and have had real problems finding non-stick induction compatible pans that work well. Even the ones I used for a couple years on my portable induction burner do not work well. The repairman says it really varies by different models and brands of cooktops and cookware and that you should test the pans in the store before you decide. Cast iron works fine.
