In nature, the wild ancestors of the modern Hybrid Phalaenopsis will be found growing on a tree or on a rock. So we try to copy nature by growing them in a pot and the roots will attach to the growing medium and the pot.

There is a Phal in bloom in this room. It has been to two monthly orchid society meetings and spent five days at a shopping centre at a show. Transport would have been bit difficult if it was floating in a bowl of water.

Roots look great. Plant looks very healthy. Just keep doing what you are doing. Arthur is right, they do not naturally grow in pots. They grow attached to trees. If you can do that at home, water, fertilize and give enough light, the plant will love it.

But, but - you do not state where you live? If in a cold climate, the plant will have to deal with very dry conditions over winter. Could dry out the roots. Please provide where you live and how you are growing your plant.

Otherwise, if in a cold climate, semi-hydro might be your best bet to get the plant through the winter months.
