Peggy, these brick are set on a sand and crushed limestone base (Dry - Layed). The particular brick used on this project is manufactured by the Endicott Brick Co. It is a 4x8 modular brick with an eased edge (chamfered) and lugged. The color is 'Manganese Ironspot'. We have used this brick on several occasions and it is always a 'head turner'. The color can look almost black, purple or burgundy, depending on the time of day or season. Thanks for your interest. Bill

Peggy, We used the same brick on our 'Burns Avenue' project. We installed a new front walk for our clients. It is the first image in the project images. Take a look!! Thanks again!

Yes, we are considering using the Endicott Manganese bricks for our front patio and your picture came up based on that search. I love the color but my hubby is worried that the patio would look too black. Does the brick get really hot under the sun? For the installation above, is the pattern herringbone? My contractor is planning to mortar set the bricks, but I see that most people just sand set them. I wonder if we can still achieve this look if we set the bricks with dark mortar. Thanks again! Beautiful work!

    Peggy,

The brick does not become any warmer than a typical brick. The pattern is a 45 degree herringbone. You could install this on a 5" thick concrete base if you were planning on mortaring the bricks. I would caution you, however, that the joints will become the week point in the project and you will need to repair them from periodically, especially if you live ine a climate that has freeze and thaw conditions. The one benefit to the dry layed process is that if there is an issue with the driveway, ie settling, you can just pull the brick up, install additional base, and re-install the brick. I drive by the driveway in in the picture on a regular basis. We installed it seven years ago and it still looks brand new! Thanks again!
