Phil, I sow all my seeds of one variant in a communal pot. It is best if the depth is about 3" - 5". Space well and if larger quantities, then use a couple pots. This works very well if you plan of leaving in them for longer period.

I use this method and I cover my seeds with grit to the thickness of the seeds.

Phil, you might take a look at the chapter about propagation in your mighty fine Adenium book. ;-) I use small individual containers and communal trays. I wouldn't let seedlings grow for "several months" in a communal tray. They get stunted.

I on the other hand will lead you in the opposite direction and recommend leaving them in communal trays since this is when they start to fatten up. But I do agree that they can begin battling for resources. I have always believed in keeping seedlings together in a communal pot until 12 to 14 weeks of age. Transplanting them too early can stunt them just as well. To answer your question Phil, I do not recommend sowing them in individual containers. Newborns like to be in close contact with others.

With enough heat and light, they'll be fine in a communal container for about three months. I've also once allowed mine to stay in the crib for up to 5 months but the roots get annoying to untangle by then.
