Arranging long, narrow, problematic LR

We are making plans for remodeling the kitchen. Have received a lot of help from Kitchen forum and thanks to wonderful people there I am close to making decision on that part. However, when I re-do and relocate the kitchen and DR I will have a problem arranging furniture in our LR. Currently we use our LR as DR because it is so long and it functioned better as DR especially since current DR is so small.

This is our current house layout

I am considering one of two new layouts. This one would have more walls so maybe it would be easier to arrange furniture in LR? House_plan1

This one would be more open plan concept and would have enough room to put an island in the kitchen but I have no idea what I would do with furniture arrangement in LR. House_plan2

Kitchen would work well with either floor plan but I am worried about the LR arrangement again. I don't the new kitchen give me more headaches with LR so I am trying to figure it out before I make final decisions on kitchen . Any help, insight and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you

If you did the first plan, but moved the LR-kitchen door to the right, you'd create an end for a conversation group, and keep traffic from walking through the middle of the room.

Did not think about it. Good idea. I will try to draw it out.Something like that? What would I do than in the area closer to the hall? House_plan3

If you are swapping around rooms, what about in using the 3rd drawing

1. Living room moves to family room (assuming this is a more formal space it would be separated from the kitchen

2. Dining room moves to Living Room

3. Family room moves to Dining Room

Or

A. Living room moves to family room

B. Family Room moves to Living room

Or what if I did only one bigger doorway to LR from Kitchen and DR something like that. (not exact measurements of changed doorways, just for illustration purposes) House_plan4

kippy - we are very casual people and have no need for formal LR and we are considering using LR as our main hang out room (FR) - your second scenario - but furniture arrangement could be still an issue. We could always make FR into a library/game room or something along those lines. Did not think to use DR (current kitchen) as FR. Another proof you need "fresh" eye to see possibilities :)

Edit: We would be loosing the eat in kitchen as we have now and that is a big sore point with my DH as he likes smaller, more intimate experience and does not like to eat in a big DR when we don't have company. I was trying to have more open kitchen so it functions and feels a little more as eat-in/DR.
