large living area. need help on everything!

Placement of everything. Obviously,no clue. Curtains. Came with house 25 years ago. Hate them. A different color maybe? Yellow sectional sofa. TV has to stay as does his brown leather recliner. Hardwood flooring. Rug. Ugh. But what size and color? Handsome brick fireplace. Open floor plan thru entire lower living area. Be brutal, but some ideas please?? (22ft x 16ft room.)

Your furniture is too spread out. Center the sofa in front of the fireplace and pull it in closer. The rug should run with the length of the sofa and the front feet should be about 8 inches on the rug as in this picture.

You could place the two like chairs on each side of the fireplace angled in.

Remove the black overstuffed chair and the blue rocker from this room at least for now. Try the ideas above and take pictures to post so we can see if you're on the right track, please?

Your rug looks light gray and the sofa is ivory so not looking like they work together. Maybe it's my screen.

OK--just saw where leather chair must stay. Why not have a separate area for TV viewing and then another area where the fireplace is the focal point and also a conversation grouping.

Put leather ottoman with leather chair and have it face the TV. TV could be centered on its wall and the bookcase goes elsewhere.

Too many faces in that room. Remove at least half of the photos, including the entire skinny legged table. New tv stand, way lower and longer, placed on wall, not corner. Lose that bookcase by the TV.

Ok, here's my take with assumptions:

    1. Cable and electrical could be put under the stairs.
    2. The 22'w is from what I assume is the closet wall where TV is now.

    See floor plans & 3 D views.
Go with a gray and yellow pallet.

I would really put some money into your window treatments. I would go with floor to ceiling draperies on rings on dark large diameter rod. Break the window up with panels so it look like two windows. Get woven roman shades with block out lining. Get with outside mount so can be mounted up at ceiling. See pic. Like color blocking for window treatments.

Chairs next to fireplace should be small scale and swivel and gray fabric.

Need large artwork as indicated in 3d plan.

Tuck TV console under stairs as far as possible and put on swivel tray.
See pics for rug, window, and throw pillows.(Picked that pillow because it has the dark brown like leather chair)

Paint fire screen black with high heat paint. Light gray wash on fireplace brick.
    Hope this helps!

You all have so many great ideas! Leelee, my sectional sofa set is pale yellow stripe. The rug is cream. And, you're right, of course. Either way it seems out of place but I don't know whether to go darker or what. (I can get rid of the rocker in the room...the big brown recliner...probably have to send the husband out with it:) Really like the window ideas. These windows are all the way across the room and then three just like them behind the smaller sectional. Lucidos, just wow. I think you just gave me some homework:) However, the fireplace brick goes all the way up to the vaulted ceiling and upstairs is an open room. The lower fireplace also is accessible on the other side in the dining room. I'm awful at all of this, but having the open floor plan has really thrown me for a loop. I'll try to manage Lucidos's tasks, and work on getting the windows redone and a new rug...and, yes, removing pictures and furniture. Then I'll be back. What color curtains and rug doey'all suggest?

    Sorry, Nancy:) Distracted.

How many people hang out here? Looks like a whole lot of seating. And really just too much furniture all around. Could you live with just a larger sectional and two chairs? You need to figure out what furniture you need before you pick out a rug. And you have to pick out a rug before you pick the window treatment. Are the floral chairs staying? They're really taking up a lot of room and not working for you.

I am assuming that the man of the house sits in that recliner and watches TV. So the TV and the recliner have to relate to each other. OK! And it looks like the TV has go on the flat wall it is next to now, or the small wall behind the sofa.

So buy a console that is enclosed and 25 percent longer than the tv is wide. Place the enclosed console on the wall between the entry way and the window wall. An enclosed console will make the room look more relaxed. Set the tv on the console centered. See pic below

Place the recliner to the left of where it is sitting now on an angle to view the TV.

Wiggle your sectional down a bit toward the window wall to allow for a walkway between the recliner and the end table and sofa to enter and leave the room. You might have to move the sectional closer to the window wall. Place pair of chairs facing the recliner and the short side of the sofa. You can have them reupholstered if they fit as a pair or buy new ones that are sleeker but work with your transitional sofa. Select pattern that combines the leather recliner and sofa colors and any other colors you love in the pattern. This will guide the other colors used inthe room from paint to carpet.

Remove all curtains and have new ones made in a neutral linen hung from the ceiling on a dark oiled rubbed bronze curtain rod; have them movable so that you break up the windows where the seams are and they all look similar because they are hanging from the ceiling. Add woven wood Roman shades or blinds for light control. See pic below

Redo the entire fireplace with either paint in a color selection that has the walls a lighter color and the brick two shades darker or do the reverse as shown in the pic below. This is a great color combinations for your room with your yellow and cream sofa. Actually you might adapt this floor plan if you put the TV on the wall that is behind the sofa now. You can play with it after you remove the area rug so you can more things around as it really helps to be able to 'see' the furniture and walk around it. Light and bright and the TV looks amazing over the console. See pic below

Invest in a round cocktail table in glass and iron for interest, functionality, and beauty. See cocktail table below. The room shown is from Ballard Designs and they do everything onling and have great design advice too. A place to start playing around with some choices and see how you feel about it?

Rug can be a geometric design that incorporates a color in print from the chairs. See pic below.

The chairs below are a geometric print but they have a busy, colorful print in the four pictures on the wall, so you could do a floral on the chairs instead of a geometric, but the rug choice would be great for the floor to add interest but not too much busy! I was typing while above ideas were being launched, but I would suggest a print for the chairs that combines the sofa and leather recliner colors and any other color that you love in a print! Some great choices shown.

I've always known I have too much furniture. Sometimes you just need someone to say it. Love the idea for the TV. Suzyq, LOTS of seating. You are so correct. And the floral chairs are some that I had made years ago before the chair and a half became popular. My husband has even said they need to go though:) (Funny. No mention of his recliner.) Soosun, I'm going to rip that thing off the wall over the long windows along with the curtains. That big redo paragraph I'll probably carry with me in my mouth while I shuffle furniture:) I'm serious. Thank you both so much.

Hey y'all. It's been awhile. Literally just found that I still had this account. I'm not attaching a photo yet, but believe me when I say how wonderful all of the comments and ideas were. I "rode" a large mahogany dresser down my stairs to place my tv on after the suggestion to get it off the floor stand and onto a larger chest....Perfect...to me anyway! Then, I purchased a new rug not nearly as large as what I thought I needed. I pulled the sofas away from the wall. The recliner had to stay, of course:)

I took down all of the pictures that covered every flat surface. Removed several skinny legged tables and bought curtains and rods to try to duplicate a window idea where my hard valance disappears and I have rods high up and curtains spaced between windows but can pull them together at night...

And then we left. Seriously. My curtains are as they were delivered and the long rods are still boxed up. We needed to move in with my father-in-law because of his health...I trekked back & forth to check on things and wanted to continue reconstructing that room so much.

Back now and so happy to find my awful photos and the great suggestions still here! I apologize for not keeping you up to date or at least explaining after getting such a fabulous response from so many people. I will post as soon as I get some strong arms to help with my curtains.
