Growing New Heuchera from just a Leaf!

I experimented with sticking a heuchera leaf into soil to see what would happen. I was amazed to see that the leaf stem rooted. I'll have to try this again in the spring with other varieties. I've always had luck with dividing these plants, but it's good to know I can try to grow more with just a leaf.

Hi digger, I always use a rooting hormone on leaves or whole babies that I take off. Just to give it an extra chance of making it. It has been awhile since I did just a leaf and I can't remember exactly how I did it but I'm thinking pulling it off might be better. I like to start with the babies...they usually root super easy.

How long did it take for the leaf to root? I live in Arizona, do you think they will root if I start now?

It was in soil for a couple of months before I decided to see if any roots had formed. Not sure how fast they actually started to grow. If I try again, I'll start some much earlier in the season, maybe in May.

Thanks for the reply. I just want an idea of when I should check for roots. I am hoping they're root while the weather is still warm (in Arizona.)

I have never rooted a single leaf in soil, but leaves in water on my kitchen windowsill frequently grow roots. Enjoy them in water all winter,then plant them in the garden in spring!

When collecting these leaves are you trimming them or do they need to be pulled off whole? Also do you think rooting hormone would possibly speed up the precess?
