Need help with Kitchen Layout & IKEA kitchen software?

Can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong? It crashes all the time and it's just not intuitive. Why did they change it? It worked fine years ago when you could download the software. I tried it using Google Chrome as well as Internet Explorer and it's just so fickle. Is it user error?

I'm trying use this idea of lower 20" and 30" glass cabinet doors with 15" solid upper doors with the 20" glass doors being above the sink area. My kitchen is much smaller though.

We are adding a dishwasher.

This is what I've been able to add so far but I can't seem to get the software to raise or lower the 15" cabinets so I can add the 20" and 30".

We will be removing the top portion of the opposite wall (as pictured below in apartment with same layout) so I did not attempt to place upper cabinets on that wall.

This is our kitchen.

Existing floor plan (sort of) since there is no door across from our sink. It's a solid wall that cannot be moved.

Hi Katrina,

To your first question regarding moving wall cabs up and down:

Select the cabinet to be raised or lowered.

Go into 3D view. Get a close up view of the cab. To the right (maybe sometimes to the left, I'm not quite sure) of the cab you'll see an up/down arrow. click up or down to move the cab until it's at the desired height.

Planner tips:

If your software is lagging, it helps to give it some time after every click before continuing. When you select a cab, wait before continuing until the cursor stops spinning. All that will prevent it from getting overwhelmed.

Make sure that all extensions in your browser are disabled. That seems to help. Keep saving often. I mean it: really often.

Ikea updated the software about 2 weeks ago. Since then the planner works much better on my Mac Ibook using Firefox. I haven't tried to run the planner with Chrome or Safari since the update.

I'm sure some layout experts will eventually chime in with design help. Good luck!

On my PC it works best on IE, but still acts quirky.

I'm a chrome person so this took me a while to figure out trying other browsers.

I have had no trouble using Firefox. As pippabean noted, it does take some patience to let it finish one action before moving to the next.

Here's a side-by-side of the two floor plans, your inspiration plan on the left (excuse the disproportionate dimensions):

One thought I had was, if you can somehow get the fridge on the other side of the bedroom door, you could have a larger closet, like this. I think you might have quite a few restrictions on modifying your structure, so you may not have many options for moving things around:

benjesbride No, it's an apartment building with restrictions on moving structural walls. This floor plan is closet to ours, same building. The open plan kitchen is in another building in the complex with everything on the opposite side. In this plan they added a dishwasher in the same spot we plan to use.
