If you have the right conditions I see no reason not to try growing them. Germination is fairly easy, it is the moving up to the next stage I have problems with. Good luck!

I agree with Hc_mcdole. I just germinated seeds for the first time. It went ok got a ton of sprouts. But I followed a sterile seed sprouting tech and when it got time to open I had issues with mold and algae. Then trying to transplant I damaged a lot of roots cause they r so delicate and many didn't recover. Lol but my first time I learned a few things. Sprouting seeds in vermiculite helps with transplant a lot and sterile seed sprouting isn't usually nessesary.

Oh. I don't know the name of the mother plant. My sister bought it for my grandmother some years ago. It was outside in the shade and went through many storms in SC. My aunt gave me a tiny piece on a napkin. It grow big then my mother put roundup on it by mistake so I saved two pieces of it.

Some form of wax begonia (semperflorens). It could be a species such as cucullata. The wild types are often "weedy" and very easy to grow from seed as they pop up in some of my pots all the time. I keep a few hanging around though as they are easy to grow, great flowering, and not fussy like some begonias. Here is an example of a volunteer wax begonia in one of my pots. (that is my boot in the bottom right corner)

For these types of begonias, they are so easy that I let them volunteer in any pot and thin them out as I see fit - no special media at all. If you have a special seed then you should probably get a seed starting mix for best results. There are a few topics on seed starting begonias through Brad Thompson, ABS, and Astro ABS (Houston branch of the ABS). These were written by the experts so check them out.
