Choosing a new iPhone

So I've decided to upgrade my 5.5 year old iPhone 4; it's served me well, but it's time. I'm looking for feedback from early adopters of the 6/6+. I currently use a case that holds my credit cards and go purse free 95% of the time. Any recommendations for which size to get? Favorite cases that hold a few credit cards? Thanks!

i have the 6. I've had 3 iphones and so far the 5S has been the most comfortable of them all. I didn't even consider the 6+ because I didn't like how big it is and I knew it wouldn't be comfortable to use with my small hands. I also have an Ipad, so I didn't need a phone that was almost the size of a small tablet. I had hoped I would eventually adjust to the size difference of the 6, but after having it for a year now it still feels less comfortable than the 5S did. As for the function of the phone itself, I love it. The screen isn't as big as the 6+ but it's still a decent size. The one con is the camera. I take a lot of pictures and it's not great and certainly not as good as the company claimed it was.

I bought the 6 because I wasn't comfortable holding the larger phone to my ear to use as a phone. I'm glad I did as carrying this one as it is, is enough of a pain if I'm not using my purse.

    LOVE my 6+ !!

All other phones now look impossibly small and inconvenient and like toys :-)

I don't carry a phone in a pocket, ever, as my slacks don't usually have pockets, so that, kind of portability is not important to me. If you are over 40 your eyes may appreciate the extra real estate of the larger screen, which means you can use the larger icons and get more on each screen. You can set the font size to large and read texts without your reading glasses.

This is my first iPhone so I can't compare it to other Apple phones. I went with the iPhone 6 and I've been very happy with it. It does fit in the pockets of jeans and casual pants if necessary but I don't usually carry my phone around the house with me and if I leave home I stick it in my purse.

I have the 5s (the 6's weren't out when I got it) but am fairly certain I will get the new 6s when my contract is up in a few months. Happy to read about the new upgrades Apple has made. I can adjust the font on my 5s just fine too. I agree with lukki about the camera, although I don't mind dragging my big Nikon DSLR around for real photo moments or my handy smaller digital camera rather than use the phone cam.

The huge cell phones really bug me, especially those who use them out in public photographing or taking videos with their arms constantly in the air and blocking the view of those behind them at concerts for example. I also run with mine & the large ones are just too big to do that comfortably.

I recently had lunch with a father and son who both have the 6+ and between the 2 of them I think I am convinced that the 6+ is the way to go... they love the 6+ and don't find the size cumbersome at all... I think I will like the larger size-

I've posted before about how much I like the 6+. I have man hands and I'm over 40 so it's a great size for me. I don't find it large at all. This is the first phone that I've been able to use to text message without frustration. I also find the camera so good I've stopped using my Canon, which is an excellent camera.

I was an android user for years because the phones were bigger. I waited to switch to iphone until they upsized. This is the best phone I've ever had in terms of ease of use. My only complaint is I cannot figure out how to not completely disconnect a call when there's a second call.

People with smaller hands tend to go for the 6 over the +.

I haven't studied what the newest 6s have though when I skimmed it said the camera should be better and something about touch? The touch thing could be potentially either very annoying or super convenient. I'd need to go play with that phone to see.

I tend to obsess over a phone purchase because if you don't like it after you get it, well, you know. It's major annoying. So I make time to go to several different phone stores and pick brains, hold the phone and get one with a live demo -- not just a dummy. Must say our local Verizon is excellent in that regard. The phones are live. I think they were about to hand me a job application I was there so much before I bought the phone.

I have the 6+ and love it for the exact reasons kswl2 stated. Still have my 4s which now feels so "petite"....DH has a 5 and is upgrading thru employer to the 6+

Just for clarity, I assume you are considering the new iPhone 6s? There are a number of upgrades, but wow, that pricing....

I'm in the same situation. Thought about upgrading last year and put it off, so I am now thinking about it again. My boys (6'3" - 6'4") both got the 6 last year. Their phones were both ailing and we barely made it to repalcement with one. They didn'twant anything larger. My sister and SIL got the 6 and my nephew got the 6+. Everyone is happy with their choices.

Mine is still plugging along, so I may wait until the 6s in actually being used and I see the feedback. I don't get a new phone every year or two, so making the bigger leap to 6s makes some sense, but I am really unsure of that variable pressure touchscreen. As pointed out -- really great or really a PITA. I think that will be the deciding factor for me once I can play with it. Everything else sounds good.

That pricing is right! Most of the major carriers are moving away from supplementing the price with a 2 year contract too so Apple just announced payment plans. $32.00 a month for 24 months for a whopping 768.00 which includes a warranty. That is jaw dropping.

At least they are being up from about the phone costs now. In the past, you got locked into a 2 yr contract and then continued to pay the $20-30 month or more that was paying for your phone after you'd paid for it. Phone costs for the latest editions are really not that much different than years ago. Seems like $700 has been that ballpark for a while. The carriers used the 2 yr contracts to spread the cost out and hide some of it with the service so people weren't shocked into realizing they could live wthout it. Now we can't live without them, so the veil comes off.....

    yeah, that's true...good point Lascatx

I was told that the payment plan thing, where you pay full price, is for people who can't get credit. They present it as an upgrade but I feel it's a total rip off.

I was just reading about it, installments for a 16 gig, which isn't much these days is 32.41, it includes a warranty, you can keep trading it in annually while starting a new contract each year (No surprise there). Of course, if you want more memory, the installments go up to I think 36 something a month, so well over 800 total. What I think is misleading is it says that price includes 2 damage incidents but in the small print it says you ALSO have to pay a 99.00 out of pocket fee each time.

I've never damaged my phone, so don't know about alternatives, but that seems ridiculous to me. It's financed through a bank so I seriously doubt its for high risk credit. I think it's just an alternative to buying it off the shelf. Personally, I'd rather just pay cash and be done with it, no contracts for anything.

Oh, you can still get it through a provider too...just found an article that laid it all out. 200 or so upfront and then 24 months of installments above your normal phone charges. So the monthly fees for your phone won't go down now even though it no longer includes any of the installments for the phone. wow....they really get ya by the **** don't they....

I've always had iPhones, but needed a new battery in an older phone (not one to switch all the time). Changed to Sprint and got on DH's plan. He had a new HTC M8 which was larger. I like that, so switched. What an effing mistake! I hated that phone from week 2. Kept it 18 months then went in and traded for the iPhone 6+. I will never have anything but iPhones. ever. again. I love the size, even though when they first came out DS got one and I thought it was huge. It was compared to my 5, but not the HTC.

I'm with you Lukki. I like not having a contract. I've been holding off on upgrading but my phone is starting to act up a bit (Iphone 5). I also am not one to change every time a new phone comes out. I don't carry my phone in my pocket either but my eyes are fine and I don't use reading glasses. The 6+ is just too big for me. Even the 6 will be an adjustment, but I will go with it. I need to read up on the 6S though. I don't want a phone the size of a tablet.

The only reason I change out each time is because I recoup money by doing so. Every time Apple does a release, a lot of companies start offering buy back programs for the old phones, including Best Buy. By trading in the most recent phone, you get a lot of money back and I've never paid out of pocket for a phone yet. Instead, I pay the 200 upgrade cost with the trade in money and have money left over. Last time I got about 350 for my 5S, I just checked and can get 420 for my 6. We're happy with the carrier, and my husband doesn't want a new phone so I just renew the contract for his phone or mine. Verizon doesn't care. If I wait until next year, I won't make that much money on it at all. But I don't want to buy a phone or installments so this year I am probably going to pass.

I got the 6. The 6 plus was too large for my hands. I've lost count of how many iPhones I have had.

Thank you everyone! I spent the morning playing with my moms 6plus and the evening with my daughters 6, now I feel more lost. Maybe I'll flip a coin.

lukkiirish, that works once you own a phone ahead of the curve. My guess is you ha to uy one up front to make that work. By the time you've stayed with a 2 yr contract, you are into that not so much zone. I always chose phones that I could get free with the contract until one of my sons convinced me that an iphone made sense for him (itunes -- he's in music).

Amyktexas, sounds like you can't go wrong then. Would you ever want to carry your phone in a wristlet or small purse, evening bag where the 6+ wouldn't fit? I am not a small person and I have larger hands -- I still felt like the 6+ was pushing it. I may play wround with them again before I chose between the 6 and 6s.

Good point Lukki. I've sold my last 2 iphones for a good price. Didn't even think to do that before, until a few phones back and I was considering a new one and a guy asked if I would sell him my old phone.

Lascatx, I'm actually able to upgrade every year because my husband loath's smartphones, loves his flip phone and gives me his upgrade option. I started with a 4S, upgraded to 5 then 5S and now 6 but the only phone I paid anything for out of pocket was the 4S. I always get way more on my trade than the 200.00 up front for the new phone and walk away with money. This time (if I go this route) I won't. But if I wait, I'll loose 420.00 and I haven't even checked some of the other buying sites yet.

So you are under a contract? Then part of your service cost is underwriting the cost of that phone. But you've found what works for you.

Yes (and no)? Its 60/mo for each of us with Verizon. When the contract is done in a year that price is not going to drop, wouldn't it have to if the payments for the phone were actually included with the monthly service fee? Or was the commitment of two years really what they were after.
