Do I "need" a different chair here?

We had guests this past weekend and enjoyed gathering in our living space, but it made me think that we may "need" a different kind of chair to go in front of the window where the Stickley dining chair currently resides. I can always use it elsewhere in the house, but it looks to me a bit like something we just pulled in from the dining room for extra seating. Of course, we COULD rely on that chair since we already have it, but I would prefer something that looks like it's a permanent part of the living room. That would make the space more enjoyable for me on a day-to-day basis. I intend to keep the small Stickley table and the mica lamp in front of the window. I just love the glow from that little lamp. I keep seeing chairs on Craigslist that appeal to me - big upholstered armchairs that I'm quite sure would be too large to use. The Stickley chair, even with its height, feels a bit spindly compared to the massive sofa and chair. I do need something in this spot though, and unfortunately the spot is pretty small. We also did rely on the bench beneath the horse painting for seating when the guests were over, so I'm glad it's in the room.

Searching. I have little design sense though. Looks cozy with your colours though. Legs don't go though.

That's a pretty chair too, akl! Re the legs - I've got legs of all sorts going on in this space. I'm not opposed to the curvy legs, actually. They're kind of a counter-point to the straight lines of the Stickley.

    I know it's not fancy, but it's from Costco.com.

It's priced nicely at ~$220. It's 36.25" high which might be a nice size with the other pieces in the room.

I like the Costco chair in your room. I think you have enough color going in with the rug and paintings, the chair looks nice as a neutral. I would add a dark brown pillow on it though

I am not too fond of any patterned chair with your pretty rug....and seems like any upholstered chair would be too bigl You seem to like your Stickley chair with cute table and lamp....how about putting a throw over the back and a cute lumbar pillow on it? Knowing me, I would put a floor plant beside the chair....lol Then again, I think I would like the bench in front of the window and your chair in front of the painting (with the little table/lamp, of course). I would probably put a pretty throw over the chair back in either location. Same floor plant by the bench.

The only problem I can envision with a plain upholstered chair is that I have cats ... and they puke. My gang are big chair-sitters, and staining is a problem at our house. :-/

I'm definitely going to leave the bench where it is beneath the painting. That spot just seems made for it. I could try dressing up the Stickley dining chair with a throw and pillow, but I think I'm still going to yearn for something else to go there instead.

So far, I like the Costco chair the best. Do you have a similar sized chair somewhere else in the house that you can put there for a day or two, just to experiment with how it "feels" to have a bigger chair in that space? I agree that something bigger and softer would work a lot better than the chair that's there now.

Don't really have anything I can do a "test drive" with. We seem to be short on furniture in this new house!

DH just texted me and reminded me that we need to buy ceiling fans. I feel I'm getting a bit ahead of myself and starting to spend SMALL amounts of money like a drunken sailor. Of course, those SMALL amounts add up to BIG amounts, so I need to be careful. Ideally, the perfect chair will come along on CL for very little $, or maybe I'll just resign myself to waiting as I am for our new bedroom furniture.

That said, I want a chair in the living room and I want it now.

    ;-)

Thank you so much, akt! That really helps a lot. Hmmmm. I like that chair, but I'm not positive I LOVE it. If it were CL priced at $50, I'd say sure - but it's over four times that, which makes me not so sure. (I know - $220 is not much to pay, really.)

I've found mats to be Godsends with the kitties. With the boys it's a hair issue. I have a couple on their tree and on select chairs where they like to sleep. I can vacuum them or toss in the washer. Easy enough to pick up when guests arrive.

    West Paw cat mats

Something else, if you do get a new chair and find your beautiful mica lamp seems dwarfed, I bet it would look great on your kitchen counters.

If you get a solid color chair, say like the costco one, it looks like you could stack a couple of pillows on it as in akt's mock-up to limit the available cat landing space; maybe it would discourage them. You could remove them or one of them when company arrives - maybe toss it on the couch or leather chair.Oh, and I love the striped one...not officey at all to me. The Belgian one looks anemic.

Oh, those mats are really cool! Do you suppose they'd give me a discount on a bulk order of, say, 47? ;-) They look so comfy that I'll bet our "kids" would actually use them. Surprised the heck out of me when they began sleeping in the bed portion of the scratcher/climber we recently bought for them.

LOL @ the "Belgian Anemic!" The seller of the striped chair just emailed and said it's still available. It's 33" wide, 22" deep and 40" high - about standard wingback size, I'd say. I also just realized that their ad specifies "$50 OBO." Now I'm even more interested.

My mock-ups are PITIFUL, but what do you think about this? Still liking the idea of a wingback chair, particularly next to the fireplace. Colors seem to work, yes? But is it too-too much?

I just love your house. The artwork looks incredible. I think the teal chair would be neat with your artwork, but I'm not sure how it would look with the rug. I hear you about the cats. I have no pillows on the couch as my puppy thinks they are his stuffed toys to pull stuffing out, so they are put away until he is older.

DH just said the striped wingback "looks like an old person's chair." Seriously? I think it's a classic design! I'm inquiring further with the seller too. Old person's chair indeed! (I'm 6 years older than him. Maybe I NEED it.)

    last modified: 11 years ago

I think I like the striped chair the best with your current furniture and maybe even with your rug.... second, the turquoise chair- would be in a tie with the beige Costco chair except the price would probably sway me since cost is a consideration...

agree the dining chair doesn't look great there- but the small lamp looks ok with the small chair- it might not look right with a larger chair there...

add- lol old person's chair! add a pillow and/or a throw and it will help it's staid look!!

Thanks! Yeah, I do love the mica lamp in the room, but will have to just see how this all plays out.

As if that Chesterfield sofa (that he loves so much) isn't "old person"! I don't know about that boy of mine sometimes.

I agree with your DH! I love wingbacks and have one, but that one would be a no-- for me.

I may have the perspective wrong, since pictures can distort things, but to me what makes the Stickley chair look out of place isn't so much style or size, but the fact that it's against the wall rather than being clearly in the grouping on the rug. Would there be room to adjust the coffee table so the Stickley can join the conversational grouping? As it is, it looks like it's an extra chair just put there for convenience, rather than as an intended part of the arrangement. I do love that lamp and the scale of the table, but it may be that moving them onto the rug would create a tripping hazard when you plug in the lamp.

Jen, I really liked the teal leather, but do know the effects of 'kitty klaws'. The first wingback I find too generic and the print chair too colonial/early American looking, both too boring for your room. ;)

Your rug and art are beautiful and I wouldn't put anything in the room that competes with them. I like the Costco chair and the first one nosoccermom posted best because they are neutral, don't compete with the carpet or art and are in harmony with the contemporary vibe you have.

Show your husband the Belgian Anemic. Now THAT'S an old person's chair! I'd for sure get the $50 or less striped one and try it. If you/he hate it, for that little $, you could resell, or even donate it.

Have you opened this thread ... help me choose ceiling light?

She has a similar sofa with a couple side chairs.

Going against the grain. I think the floral patterned chair will look nice in front of that window and bring some of the colors of your art work with then bench under it to that side of the room.

Keep looking. I do like the style of the Costco chair except for the legs & color, which needs to be deeper and brighter. I don't care for the wing chairs at all, and not the stripes or patterns with the decor you have. The modified wing chair nosoccermom posted is ok but a little tall. Or put another Stickley chair with it to make a pair for conversations so that it doesn't look so isolated when you have guests.

Pretty chairs in that other thread. That style would be too deep for where I'm considering, but I do like that style.

Still waiting to hear back from the CL seller, as DH wants to know if the width is being measured wing to wing. He doesn't know if he can fit the darn chair into his vehicle. (We had a terrible time loading the chairs we got from another CL seller for our media room; what we thought would be a simple pick-up turned into a 4 or 5 hour ordeal that was anything but pleasant. But hey, $25 chairs.) I've also asked the seller if delivery is a possibility, so we shall see. DH did proclaim the striped chair "old person", but then said he'd be fine with it if it's what I want.

I've gone back and looked at the Costco chair, and realized that the price includes shipping, which certainly helps. I wish there were some reviews posted.

lovesummer, I see what you mean but still think the Stickley chair is clearly going to read "dining room", since its "sisters" are visible in the adjacent dining space. I'd really just rather have something that is intended solely for the living room. Something you can sink into a bit more comfortably.

Could you get the striped one and drape a solid color coordinating washable throw over the back and seat, if you find the stripes are too much when/if you bring it home? It might give a more solid color look, and if the kitties upchuck, hey, it's washable!

I was trying to find a quick photo example, but this is NOT it. Read the comments below the pics! I meant to drape the throw OVER the seat.

I'd round up a CL wingback with straight legs, good lines, and reupholster it. I feel that room is screaming for a houndstooth check (not too bold) or plaid. Very Ralph Lauren-ish.

My3dogs, I am laughing SOOOOO hard right now at those comments! The one about pubic hair! (Can I say pubic hair here???) Hahahahahaha! I am ROLLING!

But yeah - I do like the thought of a pretty throw draped over a comfy chair. I do not, however, like AT's chair that looks like it's had an accident. ;-D

Houndstooth check, eh? See - I think I'm getting so many different opinions/suggestions precisely because my house is so weirdly eclectic. So many different STYLES going on under my roof.

That houndstooth chair is cute! DH would probably murder me if I said we had to drive to Frisco for a CL chair though.

The other one? I've been eyeing it as well. Do you like it? I think it's lovely, but too ornate for my room. On the other hand - is it? What a nice price. Are you going to get it? ;-)

Ha! No, I need a pair for our office. :D

My living room is smaller, but set up similar, and this size chair fits well.

(Terrible and weird-colored cell phone pics, almost impossible to photograph this room because of the windows! And, you can tell we have three kittys, right?!)---

Gorgeous room, MizGG! Yep, we have a very similar set-up to our rooms! Love the size of chair you have in front of the window.

My3dogs - no, we're a good 5 hours away from Austin. That is a beautiful chair though. For $40? Wow!

Just gonna vent about CL sellers now. This happens to me more often than not. I'll email and ask more than one question, but they only answer one. Causing me to have to go back and ask AGAIN ("Thank you - now, what about the ... blah blah blah?") - which I find very annoying. Do they not want to sell their items? If they DO want to sell their items, why can't they be thorough in their responses? Ugh. UGH.

Thank you! And YES about CL. It drives me nuts. We sell painted furniture on there*, and write long posts with every piece of info we can think of. I don't want to have constant e-mails about it.

Another vent (sorry) ..... people who tag every town in D/FW and every furniture store in their ads. If I'm looking in my specific town (west of Ft Worth), I don't want to see something in McKinney, Allen, etc! And if I'm specifically doing a search for something from, say, Restoration Hardware, STOP saying your dumb DIY built table is "just like RH!" or your crappy Pepto-Bismol chevron painted 1970s stereo cabinet is "just like Pottery Barn!" and tagging it as such. IT IS NOT. Ok, I'm done. :D

*Only pieces that are unsalvageable otherwise.

YES!!! Why oh why oh WHY does the chair in Carrollton appear in the Mid-Cities section? (Mid-Cities is comprised of Hurst-Euless-Bedford-Colleyville -- Carrollton belongs in the DALLAS section, dummies!)

And yep - have noticed more and more people tagging things RH or PB, or even with the names of higher-end furniture brands like Henredon, when clearly it is NOT. Craigslist Clowns. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I think you need one or a pair of upholstered Parson's chairs in that room, perhaps one on either side of the cased opening (where you have the current one and another across on the other side of the doorway). Alison posted a link to a site awhile back called Carrington Court for parson's chairs, and although I haven't yet ordered from them I fully intend to do so. You can choose your own fabric from many choices on their website, and very nice tailored details are available. Parson's chairs could be used in your dining room also, or anywhere---they are so much more portable than wing chairs and take up less real estate in the room.Carrington Court Parson's chairs

Glad you're kind of (kind of not!) narrowing it down. Happy to see some love for my chair I picked! Good luck in your choice, you have done so much in so little time!

We are going to look at the striped wingback chair in the morning. After mapping out its dimensions in the space where it would go, it is the perfect size. Here's hoping it is very nice in person and is as good of a find as the barley twist coffee table was. ;-)

I agree that the stickley chair needs to move out of that room. I like the turquoise chair, but would not do a leather chair with the leather you already have. You need an upholstered chair and IMHO, a patterned chair. I don't really see the two patterned chairs for your room. I would wait till the right thing came along. That said, if you like the $50 chair, it's only $50 and you could still wait for just the right chair and then either use that elsewhere, or sell.

You probably don't "need" these chairs that match your sofas, then, do you? On ebay, auction ending soon: Matching club chairs

Have you tried moving your dh's chair from the library room? Seems like it would be a better fit than the striped wingback ... especially considering your dh's initial reaction ... which I have to agree with and I'm older than both of you. Just because something is cheap doesn't mean it's right.

Oooooh, those matching club chairs! I see they went unsold, but I'd need a much larger room. ;-)

Tina, exactly my thoughts on the price. The striped chair will do nicely for now and we can always replace on down the line. But at least we will have something in the room that is more comfortable and guest-friendly at very low cost.

No - DH would pitch a fit if I moved his yellow flowered chair. ;-)

Ok, then your chair. I assumed the floral one was yours. ;)

Thought you'd get a kick out of this .... perfect example of ridiculous tags. A "china cabinet" tag? "Cedar chest"? Wha ?? And again, I put in my town, and this is in Decatur.

(They are pretty, though. I'd love them for my office, but I want chairs with arms.)

Hope you like the striped chair tomorrow!

Good Luck with the striped chair...I like it the best of those posted so far. It has the right bones and the stripes are classic. You could always change out the fabric later if it becomes someone's favorite chair :)

Keep us posted on the striped chair - but I totally agree with Kippy on the flowered chair...

Look at these chairs on Ebay for only $20 each! I could see these in your home--reupholstered in a dark velvet or suede with nailhead trim or even a tapestry/kilim. I think the style would be perfect with your chesterfields, barley twist and Stickley. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Vintage-Re-Op-holstered-Chairs-/151781906619?hash=item2356e818bb
