Can I underplant trillium

Have trillium in a prominent spot near my kitchen door and when the trillium dies back, it looks pretty sad. The area is mostly shade as it is on the north side of the house. Can I successfully underplant the trillium with fall bulbs or is there something else that could take the place of the trillium as it dies back?
