Wrong time of year to prune and get maximum amount of blooms next Spring.

What's your definition of huge? Are they growing out over the driveway or sidewalk?

Do you have a picture showing the problem?

if you want to reserve bloom, prune right after bloom. if you want to downsize only, prune in the fall. Just don't expect much for bloom next year.

Always leave one living terminal leaf. So that you do not have branch die-back.

You could make trees out of those azaleas!....and see out the windows.

Prune them as if they were trees instead of blobs.

I have sacrificed blooms and pruned my azaleas hard to correct size issues in the fall. I would rather have an evergreen bush that doesn't flower for one year and be able to see out that window than keep that large thing 6 to 7 months just to enjoy flowers. It will flower again the following year.
