How to fold a fitted sheet.

A year ago when we bought our dual king and the only sheets I could find to fit the two XL Twin mattresses had full elastic on the fitted sheets. I have never had any trouble what so ever folding the fitted sheets that have the elastic just across the top and bottom so I it's been driving me bonkers to have to wait for help to fold the fully elastic sheets for the past year.
Since my hubby is usually the one that helps with this somewhat new task, he sent me this video and wow! I can't wait to fold sheets again!

I have gone to using a flat sheet for the bottom sheet. Having seen too many videos with ways to fold a fitted sheet and which I can never easily replicate, I love going back to the old days of hospital corners. I am totally satisfied now.

Hope the technique works for you! I have tried that, but can never get it quite flat and smooth enough. Oh well.

I've always been one that could fold anything. In fact when working in a fabric store I was the only one that could fold patterns and get them back in the envelope. But these all around elastic sheets drive me nuts. Granted there's not far to go most days, but still. I could always get the first fold, but once I tried to get the ends to meet they'd always twist up on me.
We have a double king, adjustable bed, so hospital corner, though I love them, would not work.

Sorry, it can't be done. I don't care how many videos they make. Can't. Be. Done. End of story, quit spreading rumours to the contrary.

    Lol Daisy!

Ha ha ha! Sorry Daisy, the devil made me do it.

I can't quit laughing! That is EXACTLY what happens each time I try and try and try to fold my king size fitted sheet neatly - then I give up and just smush them into the linen cabinet. OMG, that is funny!

I like the advise all bedding for a given bed goes in its pillow case when not in use. It his situation the stuff and squish down with other blankets works for me!!

I say to do the best you can and don't worry about it being perfect. I store the sheets in a corresponding pillow case. That way you can't see the mess you made. Works for me

Jen, I hate to admit, but I have done that before with these sheets while hubby is traveling and I get tired of looking over them as they lay in a clump on top of the dryer. Ah for shame. When that happens to someone with OCD you so know they've had it.
Maybe I should just put them on the bed in layers, removing one once a week. Ha! We go to bed clean and with microfiber not to many dead skin cells would weave there way through right? 8^O

We're getting around this at the new place by having only one set of sheets per bed. They're stripped off on Saturday, washed and put right back on the beds. Folding? What is this folding thing of which you speak?

    ;-D

We have several sets, but end up stripping, washing and reapplying the same favorite sheets. However, I do fold them after they come from the dryer. I iron the pillow cases and flat sheet header, too! I now have started getting DH to help me make the bed.

OK, I tried the video method of folding and had a bit of trouble getting the bottom sheet to spread out flat. It didn't help that the dog kept jumping up on the bed and sitting in the middle of the pile. :)

OP, since your DH sent you the video, I'd ask him to do the folding since he is such an expert! LOL

BTW - I love having the elastic go all around the bottom sheet/mattress. No more sides riding up! I do not like flat bottoms for the same reason. We wake up in the morning with the sheets all wrapped around each other. The king sheets are not made long and wide enough anymore to make proper hospital corners.

I just make sure there is at least one square looking edge that can be put forward in the linen closet. The rest of it can just be smooshed to fit the stack, then I place the neatly folded flat sheet on top to hide my shame.

That looks easy, but I can't see myself taking the sheet to the bedroom to fold it. We have queen sheets and the fitted may not be perfectly folded, but it's close enough.

Now that there are no small children living in our house, we have one set of summer sheets and one set of winter sheets for each bed. The sheets are taken off on wash day, launderedand ironed, and put right back on the beds. How they are folded at the season changeover is one of those household mysteries best left to our housekeeper. I don't even know where they are.

Ha Jen! You are very wise. That's a great thought to just have one set for each bed. Why didn't you tell me that over a year ago before I bought these darn sheets! Of course it doesn't help that our bed has two mattresses surrounded by a bed frame that keeps me from moving them apart to make it easier. I guess that's not any different than you though since your hubby has a spare room for those noisy nights. I wonder if they make noise canceling in the ear wireless ear buds?

nhb, Ha ha ha! Maybe having the dog help wasn't such a good idea. LOL Rarely do I make our beds alone. Especially now that we have a monstrosity duo king size. The comfort is well worth the extra effort though. He's the oldest of five and his Mom taught him very well. He cooks, he cleans, he does laundry, does all the guy stuff too. He's like the best of an old fashioned and modern man put together. I'm so spoiled. I sure hope I'm worth it to him. I try to spoil him back and he claims I do, but sometimes I feel like I fall short.
I'm sure the elastic does help with that to some extent, but we have adjustable beds where both the legs and head raise.
When we had just a normal queen size bed, I'd buy all our blankets in king because we'd wake up cold each night because the other had all the blankets. We used to joke about who started it. LOL Especially with his working out of town, "well I never wake with all the covers around me when I sleep alone, so it has to be you that starts it" sort of thing. All in fun of course. Humor is such a wonderful thing in marriage. Not only about your spouse, but yourself too.

Errant, did you look in the armoire in our hallway to get that idea? LOL I have so done that trick too.

Cindy, our laundry room is at the center of the upstairs so close to all bedrooms. If it were in the basement or on another floor, I probably wouldn't either. Then again, if it worked, I might.

    kswl, you are blessed.

I had a thought while writing the comment to Jen. Why not just roll them up, fold that over a couple times and be done with it? Not as many wrinkles as wadding up and tossing it would bring? If I can't manage the way they did it in the video, I'm going to try that.

I just tried the video method. It involved umpteen trips around the bed to access the other side. The hardest part was keeping my cat off the bed.

In the end, it didn't look any better than how I fold them up in the air with hands spread far apart. And what's up with perfectly neat little packages of clean sheets? I don't know anyone who has glass fronted linen cabinets. Who cares?

For those who use a flat sheet on the bottom. I also experimented with that this morning. My flat queen wasn't big enough to tuck in so that it will stay put after a night of tossing and turning. Would I need a king on the bottom? My mattress is rather lofty.

I just watched the video again and it appears that's a pretty darn small mattress when you compare it to the person folding the sheet.

Linelle, you may very well need a king size, but not sure even that would work because of the length.

That's the same experience that I had with the dog and my King sized bed.

Yes, I would buy the King sheets if you want to use them for a Queen bottom.

justgotabme - We have the up mattress, but chose not to have the feet lift because we didn't want a split mattress. I could not see myself changing sheets on a King split. Good thing we made that decision because I have hurt my shoulder (soon after buying new mattress) and can hardly lift the edge of the mattress to change sheets. I lift up the back with the remote to fit the bottom sheet at the head of the bed.

You have a great husband! Mine is pretty good, too. ;)

Justgota, you're right, a flat king is the same length as a flat queen and neither are long enough to tuck top and bottom. I suppose some can be had that are super long, but I'm not motivated enough to buy one.

I'm sure we all have better things to do with our time, even if it is just scrolling to another thread.

    :)

I keep my folded sheet sets in baskets in my linen closet. Looks pretty, and I don't stress about how neatly (or NOT) they are folded. My friends tease my that I'm kind of "Martha Stewart-ish", but that's OK!

tvq1! That is my solution also. I have a large basket in our linen closets that hold the sheet sets! LOL I love baskets/containers in a closet and while it hides my imperfections, it also pretties up the closet.

nhb22, my hubby could have gotten by without the feet lifting, but when I don't have my feet raised I slide until my feet hit the foot board. If that weren't there I'd probably slide right off as there have been times my knees were bent when I finally woke. I usually sleep on my back because of neck and shoulder issue/pain.

Yep Linelle, I know that from working in a fabric store and helping customers figure amounts of fabric needed for quilts. Though a California King is a bit longer, four inches, it's not long enough to make a difference.

cmarlin20, of course we do, which one could say about almost anything we do.

tvq1 and tina61, awhile ago I bought a set of baskets online with the intention of building a cabinet to store linens. Sadly the baskets were such odd sizes with pokey that I returned them at the store for something else. The ones I purchases would have worked well, but the store only had one set of various sizes. I hate when they do that.

Going to look for baskets if we put our house on the market. My linen closet started out looking so good and neat 9 years ago. Now looks like a pack of dorm buddies have thrown all their clothes on the shelves.

I wish that my DH would let us lift the bed enough that I could sleep on my back. I snore if it is flat. He will only allow the bed to be lifted a couple of inches for reading. Actually, it doesn't help to read at all! I end up sleeping on one side the whole night and am in pain when I wake up (earlier than normal.) UGH!!!

My linen closet has bypass doors that my cats open easily. They like to burrow in the towels, knocking many out of the way for the perfect fit. I'm always having to straighten things up in there. It's a good thing they are so cute.

nhb22, I'm sorry you aren't sleeping well. I've suffered pain cronic since I was pregnant with our daughter who turns 31 next month so I feel for you. We knew we'd need the duo motion since I'd been propping myself up in our old bed in order to sleep on my back to ease my pain.
Have you thought about getting something like THIS adjustable three piece wedge system or maybe even one of THESE folding wedges? That way your hubby could lay flat and you could sleep more comfortably. I was going to say there is nothing worse than not getting a good nights sleep, but yes, sadly there is.

Linelle, I know the feeling! My Mollee cat learned when she was a tiny little ball of fur how to open bi-fold doors from either side. After getting closed in the pantry a few times and crying for help, I decided to teach her a lesson. Her learning to open and close those doors at will was not the lesson I had in mind though. She opens them from the outside by tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap..... ing on the door until it finally pops open enough for her to walk inside. Not something you want to hear when you are trying to get to sleep at night. Which is what happened last night. If I weren't so tired I'd have gotten up, walked across our bedroom and catty corner across the hall and opened the door for her so she could walk in the laundry room and sleep on the fleece Packer blanket I laid there waiting to be washed. Which darn it, I forgot to wash today. I may as well just open the door when I go up to bed tonight. LOL

OK--just one more comment on this topic--look what was in my book selection (Book Bub) email today:

LOL--I won't be ordering this one!

Prior today I had never clicked on the video because I know how to fold a fitted sheet!!! A few years ago I got frustrated and found a video that had a real solution. The above is not solution for me because I am not running around in circles, and I am not spreading it flat on my bed :)

Two videos of the technique I use, which you have to practice a couple of times before you get it, but it really works.

    Martha's video

This method looks simple enough, however it would never work for me because our bed is always covered with a spare top sheet to keep cat hair off of our quilt and duvet. So not only do I ever get to see my pretty bedding, I don't have enough cat hair-free space to lay the sheet on prior to folding. Anyone want a cat? Or three?

localeater, that's how I've always done it, perfectly I might add, before sheets started to have elastic all the way around. It could partially be that our sheets are microfiber, that's all I could find in solid TXL sheets after we bought the bed, but after seeing even Martha have trouble I think it's that the elastic pulls the bottom in all directions but how I want them to go! Which is why I'm going to try the lay out on the bed idea in the video I shared. We have four sets for each TXL that makes up our king bed and right now I'm just not in the mood to do laundry. I'll have to Friday, since we're on the last set, so I'll try it then. Too much stress to try it alone.
Bluebell66, I hear ya. We used to let the cats in our room too. It didn't last long since we got tired very quickly of cleaning the cat fur off the bed. We have four long haired cats. Love them, but also love saving time when I can. My BP is very high right now and just keeping the upholstered pieces in the living area of our home is more than I can handle without breaks right now.
