There are hundreds of species, many of them closely similar - multiple species have long been in cultivation under the wrong names.

Identification of most naturalized species
requires fruit characters and mature foliage; unfortunately, floral

I do understand that there are hundreds of species and would never claim to know more than a few. I had never come across a blackfruited Cotoneaster. So I got the top one wrong. However, when you said both were Cotoneasters, I was prompted to look up black fruited species. So I learned something.

you're both my heroes and I learned something from both of you. And after looking at it again the morphologies are not too different, so I am sure it's melanocarpus, but which is still a question. Thanks again so much

After looking at side-by-side pictures, I lean towards cotoneasters for both, because the berries aren't quite as dense as on the Aronia. This pic is pretty similar to my C melanocarpus shrub....

Aronias have a different structure than these plants.

Comparing the photos I have access to with the actual plants, they look a bit similar, but as I said above the C. is a closer fit.
