I would try it. Pole beans grow so tall so fast they would train to your trellis quickly with some help. The only potential issue I see is having too many vines piling up and overcrowding. It might be a great idea we can all learn from. Otherwise try getting a friend, family member or neighbor to set you up a simple trellis on each side of the tank.

Thanks craig. That would sure make things easier.......but I'm not sure if I'd be able to get to the inside area to pick, when it got really full. I already plan on needing to keep a ladder close by.......so that might not even be an issue. The 2 different trellises would only be about 2' at most away from each other. Do you think they'd both get enough sun? Hmmmm.....I'm liking this idea!

Some beans do well when planted two seeds together every 6 inches. For some that would make a huge tangled mess and they do better at 2 seeds together every 18 inches.

Two trellises 2 feet apart would make picking difficult! The closest that people report putting trellises is about 4 feet and even then the vines cross over a lot.

Another possibility would be to plant pole beans along one edge and something short along the other edge. - Dick

I do have a 4' long 2' wide stock tank with a trellis now that is growing pole beans. It might not be totally easy.......but I do think the double trellis might be do-able. I can easily reach in from both ends to pick, and I might even be able to just reach through from each outside to grab the beans, since the cement reinforcing mesh has large openings (with the help of a ladder for the tall stuff). This is all sort of an experiment for me this year.

I've had a "regular" garden........planted in the ground for about 40 years, but I just can't deal with all the weeds and bending over anymore. So except for the cucumbers and snow peas, I'll be using stock tanks for everything else. I have used a couple stock tanks for 2 years now, and everything has grown great in them. I just need to figure out the beans. It may take a couple years to tweak it all, but it should be interesting.
