are you looking to keep it growing all winter or are you looking to have it go dormant then start up again in the spring?

Both I guess? Whatever would work. I don't want to set up a grow light for it.

unless you provide light or have a good window to the south that gets a good amount of sun light it's not really feasible for a pepper plant to grow. not that difficult to setup a light. buy light, hang, put plant underneath. it doesn't have to be fancy. ;-)

Actually I do have a really nice south facijng window... but I will probably just go for dormancy for spring planting.

It is pretty simple to overwinter pepper plants. They are perennials after all.

There is another thread on overwintering going on right now and in it, i describe the method I use along with pictures showing pruning and repotting. I never use grow lights for overwintered plants. Although they try to produce peppers throughout the winter, I don't typically allow them too. My reasons for overwintering are simply to get them from one growing season to the next.

I have several experiences with keeping them growing over winter. Every time it has ended up with filling the house with aphids. Then I have to wait for the ladybugs to come in the spring to eat the aphids. I found it easier just to replant every spring.

Peter, I overwinter several pepper plants and have two that are going into their third winter. I leave them outside til it is in the 40s here at night and then bring them inside. I keep my house on the cooler side during the winter and have had no issues with bugs at all. I think I may have have septoria overwinter in the one plant and will either segregate it or toss it this year, it is a sweet purple pepper. I also have two habanero, one jalapenó, ghost, and a paprika that have all survived at least one winter. This year I am adding a golden cayenne and the chocolate scorpion. A local farmer told me I was crazy to try as the success rate is low, but it was good for me. I even seed some of the super hots around now and overwinter the plant to get a head start. I will say that all the plants that I do overwinter are all in containers. I have never tried to dig one up.

Aphids are a concern. However, they are easily taken care of with insecticidal soap. Once you kill them and the whole generation off, you won't get them again. They are a pain, but if you really want to overwinter peppers, it shouldn't dissuade you.

It just dawned on me that I have now cursed myself. I will end up with the largest household infestation of aphids the world has seen.
