I think there are paints designed for cabinets so ask about them at your local paint store. You should also use a sprayer to get a more professional finish. Check youtube for videos on how to paint your cabinets as it's not as easy as it looks.

Judy, the most important part of cabinet painting is the prep work. You must clean with TSP and then a de glosser. Priming is a must also. Then pretty much any good quality paint. I've painted my kitchen in both of my homes as well as bathroom cabinets. I usually make my own chalk paint then seal them with polyurethane.
