Another rug question

last modified: 11 years ago

This rug has come up in a couple of discussions today.

And it's actually been in my cart at rugs.ca for the last week, but I'm uncertain.

I don't have a good, recent interior shot of the house, but it's a modern industrial style house, and I like occasional vintage pieces. Currently, everything is grey. There's no furniture yet. I tried out this rug, and loved the colour, but didn't love the size (too narrow), so I returned it. And while I loved the colour on it's own and with my floors, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to bring in some bold greens, blues, or oranges.

Here are a few others I've liked:

I was afraid the blues would be too washed out. And the last one has kind of a Christmas-y thing going on.

I also love the overdyed vintage rugs. I'd buy this one from rugsusa, but their international shipping partner has some issues and I'm not able to get ahold of anyone to sort it out. I'm also not able to tell from the website if this is a true overdyed rug, or one of the ones that looks like it in the photo, but is actually just woven with faded threads.

I like rugs 2 and 3 the best. While I love rug 1, I think with your wall color, 2 or 3 would be better. It just depend son whether you prefer more red or blue and what kind of pattern. Both are reminiscent of tribal rugs. Four is fine but a bit more traditional (and not so special), 5 looks kind of Christmasy. The overdyed rugs are trendy but already on their way out. Not to mention that the colors don't give you a lot of options.

Is there a difference in material, size, or price?

I like the any of the first four rugs you posted above. I think any of those would be great in your room. I wouldn't do the "Christmas" rug, nor do I care for the plainness of the overdyed rugs. It just all depends on which way you're leaning to go with other elements in the space, color-wise and style-wise.

My personal favorite is the second blue one, but I think it depends on what you plan to do with the rest of the furniture and what colors you prefer.

Really nice looking space, though, love those big windows!

I'm not quite sure of the numbering, but if you count the first one posted, but not the one shown in your home, I like 2 and 4 the best, hands down. Don't care for the overdyed ones at all. I like the idea of bringing in vintage looks in an otherwise very contemporary space.

The front entrance is just to the right of the stairs, and I am going to need a rug there, too. I was thinking that I'd like to so a geometric pattern there. It would definitely be easier to find an entry rug in a geometric than something vintage or traditional. So I liked the overdyed for the ability to work with non-traditional rugs in adjacent spaces.

I currently have a medium brown sectional, but replacing it is high on the list. DH is insisting on a recliner, but I'm hoping that I can convince him to get a modern, clean lined one rather than the marshmallow type. (I never thought I could relate to Frasier.) And then I'll be getting a square lined couch. Colour will be dependent on the rug.

We had originally planned for built-ins under the speakers on the right side wall. But we delayed it in case of budget issues. And now that I could go for it, I'm feeling like it's not worth the money. It was going to be a wall-wall 36" high cabinet in white with a walnut countertop. I'm now on the hunt for a used sideboard or credenza that I may paint a funky colour.

The kitchen is to the left. The cabinets are grey and white, the counters are charcoal and butcher block. The bs tile is probably going to be shades of grey (paper sample below).

My KA mixer is royal blue. All other colours are basically waiting on the rug to make a decision.

Oh, and they're all about the same price and available in the sizes I'm considering.

Here's another one I've requested a price on.

    Or a completely different direction:

The first ones were all polypropylene. These ones are wool and wool/silk blend, and are therefore a little more expensive.

I'm not a fan of the last ones you posted. I have to agree, 2 and 3 are the best option so far.

Do you not like Tibetan rugs?

I'm not familiar with Tibetan rugs specifically. These are ones I've seen that I can get in Canada.

I like the blue/pink one you recently posted. And I love your space! Totally my style. What are the floors? They're gorgeous.

Traci, the floors are maple, site finished with a 50-50 mixture of Bona Special Walnut and Medium Brown. And a fine layer of drywall dust. :P

Rugs are so hard!! I'm looking for some as well. Do you have some stores nearby that will bring some out to see your space? Most rug stores will bring several out for you to try in your space at no charge. Even if you don't buy one of those rugs it'll give you a better idea of what to look for in the future.

The kinds of places that would do that are all way over my budget, unfortunately. :(

Amber, you mentioned that new furniture is high on the list. Maybe it would behoove you to address your furniture choices first, then come back to the rug afterwards. It will surely give you more room for upholstery choices and even style by addressing the furniture first. Or at the very least, figure out the pieces you want, make a board and then look at rugs.

If you are wanting to bring in green, orange, and/or blue the second blue rugs offers lots of possibility, but personally, given your style, I really like the last one you posted!

lukkiirish, I tried starting with furniture. I have a short list. But the potential couches and recliners come in pretty much any colour. So I decided to buy a rug I like, and use that to narrow the colour. This is currently the top contender. In either navy velvet, burgundy velvet, light grey velvet, or white leather. There are other options, too.

And I found this cabinet today. It needs some help. I will probably replace the veneer on the top with a maple (which I have, other wise I'd probably do a walnut); paint the doors/drawer fronts in white, and the cabinet frame in a colour. I may paint the inside, or cover it with a patterned paper.

What about this one? It's caught my eye a few times, but shipping to Canada has made it too expensive. But I found another source and it's within budget now.

DH would love the orange, not sure about the pink. :P

I'd pick the sofa first and then decide on the rug.

I think a rug is the hardest to find and decide on. I agree with picking the rug first than the sofa.

i kindof like the last one you posted, but that is a totally different look than the 1st ones... !

    I like 1, 2, and 4 of the 1st group you show...

Wow! That last one sorta knocks your eyes out.

    I LIKE it.

That sofa is beautiful! And it's nice to see you're going to put something refurbished in the room too. I just didn't want you to have regrets but it seems like you have a plan over all which is great!

I meant to decide first on whether it should be a navy or a white sofa.

I pulled the trigger on the orange one. I'll find a place for it. :)

Nosoccermom, I couldn't decide on the couch colour. Or what colour to paint the credenza. That's the problem. Without a jumping off point, there were just too many options.

Here is a link to a number of rugs similar to your first rug that is too small.

    Very pretty choice.

What does that mean for the sofa and the cabinet?

Love the orange one! I think it will look great in your space! BTW, I love your space. It is so interesting and cool!

aktillery, how did I miss those earlier? That site is the same company as rugs.ca, so I can get any of those with free shipping and Cdn $, so it's one of my least expensive options. So that's a backup plan now.

NSM, I love the idea of a white leather couch, and think it would look awesome with the rug. But I'm not sure given that most of my walls are white. The dark grey wall was picked with the intention of white cabinets along the bottom, and a TV hanging above. The dark grey would help camouflage the TV. (TV is my husband's business, so we're not ashamed of having it on display. But I didn't want a black rectangle on a white wall.)

So, I'm thinking the couch is now going to be grey. The cabinet is getting the maple top, white drawer fronts and a dark peacock colour on the frame. Inspired by:

    and

BIL helped me unload the cabinet yesterday. The last he had heard was that I wanted built-ins, and DH wanted something temporary. His comment was "This will teach DH for asking for something temporary." DH had approved it based on pictures (and price). By the time DH saw it in person, I'd already pulled the stickers off, which he's disappointed in.

The orange rug arrived a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure about it, but the dog LOVES it.

I like it better in real life than the picture off the website. It almost looks fluorescent in the web pic.

Yeah, it's definitely more muted IRL.

It looks good! I just finished Rug Agony last week. It is so hard to judge the colors online! Ended up doing a weekend trip just to look at them in person and liked some that I had not been interested in online and immediately dismissed some that had been previous "favorites."
