Apple IOS9 update

Anyone else get bitten by the update? My phone crashed while we were traveling to see DS in his first performance in a new place. I lost the photos I took there -- nothing else critical, but took 4-1/2 hours at the Apple store to get it restored and still need to get some things reset and get it synced to my car again. I was about one breath away from giving up and replacing it with a 6 -- the hesitation only because the 6s is almost out. Is that purely coincidence? ;)

Oh well, I've had so much fun that now I'm thinking I can put off the fun of getting a new phone set up.

oh nooo!!! I'm so sorry. Did you by any chance have the pictures on the share or auto upload to icloud? I've updated both my ipad and phone but they are the most recent models so no problems except they don't respond to touch as seamlessly they're either over sensitive to the touch so cr*p opens when I don't want it to and or they don't respond at all and other don't open when I want them to, it's so annoying.

When I bought a new phone last weekend, the guy I bought it from says that rumours are circulating that updates are made to cause problems forcing people to purchase new product. That seems to be a bit too conspiracy-theory-ish to be true but sometimes it sure seems like it could be.

No -- I didn't catch them, but someone at the concert was taking photos of the trombones and posted them to Facebook, so I am able to share those. There will be more concerts, and I will learn to be more careful.

I think I remember hearing similar things with either the 5 or 6. The part that had me considering getting a 6 and not waiting for teh 6s was that (1) I was in the store and being helped rather than havig to come back and wait again, (2) the prices on the 6 have already gone down and (3) the processor is so much slower on the 4 and we got stuck a couple of times and had to start over. He said the update would be faster on a 6. Now that it is updated, it is working well and the battery life does seem better. I do need to commit to a phone and get a new case soon.

I haven't updated and now I may not LOL. I'll be sure and back up first. When is the 6s due out? I've been putting off getting a new phone but this one has been a bit wonky at times and I probably should go ahead and get a new one.

This Friday -- if ou have a reservation or are willing to stand in line to wait for one.

I updated with 0 issues. Only difference I noticed is that I cant turn the off the cc on showtime. Dont know whether it will be the same on Netflix. But very annoying. Plan to call them. One thing about the updates is phone/pad should be plugged in for best result.

roc--funny u mentioned showtime because I experienced the same thing the other day! Thought it was just an app thing but you never know!

I did have my phone plugged in. Do those of you who didn't have problems have newer phones?

Upgraded on 6 with no issues. Excited for the 6s to arrive Friday!

Updated on 5S and iPad Air with no discernible problems. My friend's 6-Plus had a problem, but she took it to the Verizon store (where she bought it) and it was easily fixed. Might have been user error. I don't subscribe to conspiracy theories and Apple doesn't need to pull a stunt to get us to buy new phones.

Updated on 6+ and now have numerous issues. No drop in signal during update of which I was aware. Touch screen problems are the most common for me. Yesterday I was unable to even end a call with the red button on the screen, had to wait until the other person hung up before call disconnected.

As much as I may dislike apple, however, it's really the only viable technology for me right now. In order to LOWER our office telephone bill, we got a free android device ----a bit smaller than iPad, larger than 6+, quite a nice size, actually. It comes with a $24 per month data charge (even with that charge still cheaper by about $100 than our current bill, ATT is worse than airlines on goofy pricing). I opened the box and set it up, charged it, and found it is very clumsy to use and the android interface is not anywhere near the apple standard. Everyone in our office has iPhones and no one even wanted it. I was going to give it away but there's no way to limit the data usage to our prepaid amount, so it is just sitting on my desk. The power cord in particular is absurdly awkward.

Thanks lascatx! No reservation and I will not be waiting in line. LOL I've put off upgrading this long, won't get in a hurry now. I'll get around to it!

BTW, Tina I found out that Verizon still offers the 2 year contract offer as well as the purchase options. That means if I decide to, I can get the 6S with no fees again and just keep the contract going as usual. Unfortunately the price offered on trade has now dropped by about 60.00 -- You may want to check how much in trade you can get for your phone before hand through the trade in option. This time around, Verizon was offering more than Best Buy.

I am not proud to admit that I'm NOT tech savvy. It doesn't interest me to keep relearning phones, etc. and I'm happy to keep what I know, even when it's not the latest/greatest. But my DH & kids urged me to install updates when I get a notice on my settings so I did so yesterday on my phone.

I didn't notice anything different with my phone (rarely use) but last night my iPad (which I use all day) came up with a pop-up from Apple while I was on GW saying I was a "winner" of a new iPhone. All I had to do was press "OK" to learn how to get my new free iPhone.

I did not press OK. I don't want a new phone. But there was no way for me to close that pop-up window & it kept reappearing throughout the evening, blocking my screen.

I turned my iPad off & I haven't seen the pop up yet this morning. Anyone else get something like this? What the heck?!

Apple doesn't have contests, sounds like some kind of phishing software downloaded from some site. Don't click on anything like this, ever.

I did change my keyboards back to uppercase.

We updated our phones (both of us have the 5s) and our ipads with no issues.

So lukki, did you ask Verison about upgrading early to the 6s? Our current contract is not up until January I believe, but i've been getting e-mails from Verison asking me to pre-order the 6s with language indicating I can upgrade 'early'. I haven't had time to drop by the store to see what that really means. I'm definitely interested.

I just updated my 6+. It wouldn't connect to the Internet after the update.. I ended up rebooting, and it works now.

No, I read it on their website through the my plan page. The reason I can update yearly is because my husband has a smartphone through work and loathes them. He has a standard flip phone he wants to keep until they force him to change, so he passes his trade option over to me.

I don't ever trust Verizon's terminology, if you have a 5S, it's probably been the 2 years or at least close to it and you're now eligible for new phones. You should check the trade in option and see what you can get for your 5S. Right now through Verizon, my 6 is worth 360. They may also have a deal with Apple regarding preorders. The more they get the cheaper the phone is for them maybe?

Yeah, after an update, you should always reboot the hardware you're using whether it's a phone, tablet or computer.

Lukki, Verizon always used to update my phone after about 18-20 months, but last time they insisted they had changed their policy and it was 24 months, no kidding. I'll check the website and will also go by and see if they are doing any deals. Thanks! And you are right, you should always reboot anyway every week or so, IMO. Not to mention clearing whatever is running in the background.

It doesn't interest me to keep relearning phones, etc. and I'm happy to
keep what I know, even when it's not the latest/greatest.

I can identify. I'm still using the Snow Leopard operating system on my MacBook.

I updated my iPad Air and iPhone 5 without any issues. One thing I can't stand about the update (but haven't had time to figure it out, yet), is why links keep forcing me into the Houzz app on my iPad, when I much prefer to use the full browser version. Same thing with Amazon. Maybe I should just delete the apps for both.

I had no issues except that some of my contacts seem to have disappeared.

Yeah, I seem to remember a similar thing. Well please let me know what you find out. I'm still on the fence about what I want to do. Thanks!

I just recently switched to an iphone and have an old 4s. Are these updates going to eventually keep my phone from functioning that I'm forced to update? I'll eventually get something else, but it doesn't interest me currently to do so.

I took a screen picture to show you the pop up I referenced in my post above. I presumed it was phishing of some sort and had no intention of clicking on it. I still am unable to clear the many bars of this message from the top of my screen. Every time I click on the circled X it pops up again instead of closing.

It might be random, but it happened the first time I used my iPad after installing the update on my iPhone.

amck2, they said this update included security fixes. Maybe yours wasn't quite soon enough. If you have an Aple store you can take it to tonight or tomorrow, I would try to get help with clearing that before they get hit with the new phone purchases on Friday.

SheeIsBack, not updating will cause some functions to not work as well, especially if yours is that old. DH has a 4s that he had not updated -- possibly ever. He laughed about it but liked his rebelion -- until he found there were things he couldn't do and no one else was having trouble. So we all told him it was time to update.

Apparently not being updated to a the newer OSs along the way is one of the things that is thought to cause problems in the update -- in other words, if if is trying to update 2 or 3 times at once. If you have multiple updates, you have to do an interim update. His phone told him he had to go to 8.4 or such before he could update to 9, so he did that and stopped for the night. After mine messed up on just the one update, he's stayed with 8.4. The battery runs down faster and he doesn't have the security fix, so he needs to complete the updating.

I don't find the changes that bad, but there is usually one or two things that make you feel stupid along with one or two that make you wonder why they didn't do that sooner. I think people should do this update especially, but I would make sure you are ully backed up before you do.

Lascatx, can the 4 and 4S even be upgraded to 8 and 9? I was under the impression that they weren't.

I know the 4s can, but I don't remember if the 4 can. DH and I both have 4s. Our sons have the 6. Isn't that the way it goes? LOL

    Totally! Ha!

Lascatx, I still have the 4s while ds14 has the 5 and dd16 has the 6. Dh has the larger 6, whatever that one is called but his employer pays for his cell phone and updates. My 4s is the first iPhone I've ever had and got it when it was first released. My kids and dh hassle me all the time to update but it still works, with a few glitches here and there. I keep trying to tell them that in my day, you didn't replace something until it broke, and even then only after trying every possible fix LOL! Annoys me that their generation has to have the "latest and greatest" - instant gratification. I'll probably get a new phone soon, but I'm really not in a huge hurry. As long as I can text, make phone calls, access my email and calendar, I'm good!

I made my kids wait until there was a need, but they still got them before us. Ever since, they have stayed ahead of us, but I think they use the phones so much more and they wear out faster. My oldest son almost didn't make it until the 6 was available before his phone died. Long story, but he's already had the 6 replaced (warranty). The main reason I plan to get the 6s is so I can make all of them jealous and be ahead of them for the year -- that and knowing that I will keep a phone until is nearly obsolete, I'd better start with the newer one. ;)

Lascatx, I spoke to Verizon today and guess what, they said if I don't upgrade and start a new 2 year contract they will cut 15/mo off the bill. This is new. I've been out of contract before without that option being available. They must have a plan to get rid of contracts still.

That's the drection things have been moving. But I wouldn't like being stuck in a 2 yr contract without a new phone. You have a newer one, but I'd still ask what happens if you need or want a new phone during that 2 yr period.

I'm not sure I know what you mean but if I get a phone and start a 2 year contract like I usually do, if something happens and I need a new phone I have to buy a new one out of pocket; unless I'm subscribing to one of the insurances they offer for those situations.

If I buy the phone using one of their new "leasing programs", I can get a new phone every year with the trade in, but I'm not sure what happens if I were to loose or destroy the phone before it was paid off. That's unclear. Apple's program forces the extended warranty on you along with the payments but I don't know about the carriers.

When you lease the phone, you the only contract you have is with the phone not the service....yet, I heard on C/Net that even when you lease, if you change carriers, you'll still have to get a new phone because the phones don't interchange between carriers. So maybe they'd buy it back and you can use that money to pay off the contract? I dunno....Now I'm really on the fence...I want to upgrade but the lower bill sure sounds nice too.

I think that if you take the lower price contract without a new phone, if you need a new phone before the end of the two years (three years of the phone's life, right?), you will either have to buy the phone outright or enter into a new, higher priced contract. That's no better or worse, just don't let it be a surprise. Phone contracts these days are more a matter of managing cash flow rather than overall savings, for the most part.

Yes, you're right, I did the math, it all comes out the same in the end. But at least now, when the service contract ends and the phone is technically paid off, they are willing to drop the price of service by 15.00 (for us) to compensate for that. Before they didn't. Just a way to make people avoid another 2 year service contract so later on, so later on down the line when they do need a phone again, they'll have to either buy it or lease it.

For us it was actually a 25.00 drop/mo because the price of 2 gigs of data dropped by 10.00 too. I don't use a lot of data on my phone so 2 gigs is plenty.

Right, no more contracts and no more new phones with every two year contracts. You have to pay for the phone outright. So, I will not upgrade my 5 until it dies. I have accessories for it like the Lifeproof case, exercise armband, and wristlet wallet that all fit it, and I don't feel like buying these all over again.

Yes -- when they were hiding the subsidized cost of the phones, they wouldn't drop the price once the contract ended. There was no reason to not update your phone then, so for a long time, we got "free" or nearly free phones.

I will never replace this phone. If I keep it long enough this racket will likely change. None of these phones are worth $700. I think this is just plain gouging.

    last modified: 11 years ago

I have often wondered what phones are really worth. It seems incredible that they can charge that much and millions of people will stand in line to pay it, but they are rather remarkable tools. What used to be the size of a show box and plugged into your car and could call across town now fits in the palm of your hand, can call the far side of the globe and well as send text messages or emails anywhere on the globe, take better photos than were possible with typical digital cameras just a few years ago, search the web for a restaurant, change your plane reservation and plan your trip to both, play music for your ride and so much more. What was a frivilous and arrogant luxury is now a necessity. And the technology keeps moving so fast that it creates constant need.

If we stopped buying them every year or two ( I suspect the average of all users is less than or at least not more than two years), then a slack in demand might bring the price down. But does anyone see that happening anytime soon? It is possible. I mean, how much more do we need in the palm of our hands, really? But not likely. I'm sure they are already working on the next carrots to be dangled in front of us and how to convince about half of us that we half to have it. What else can you think of that gets replaced by half of it's owners every year? As long as demand keeps up and technology keeps changing, I don't see prices going down.

So what is this portable mini-computer, telephone, camera, and wireless connection to the world that, aside from the amount of data storage, does more than my laptop actually worth? Hellifino.

ETA: If you keep a phone for two years, the cost is less than a dollar a day. Most folks spend more than that on coffee, soda or bottled water. Or a working water fountain, for that matter?

I saw this article last night. Says the 9 update turns on a setting you need to turn off if you do not have unlimited data plan: ARTICLE

"What else can you think of that gets replaced by half of its owners every year?"

Cars. Leasing became the norm when prices hit a range that was no longer affordable to the majority. The enticement to keep the wheels turning and payments coming in was the lure of a new car every year or two which provides a consistent level of sales for dealers and a never ending source of interest payments to lenders.

I read somewhere that Apple decided to get into the business of leasing phones and when they notified carriers, carriers quickly climbed on board. They are offering a new phone Apple every year, carriers every two years as usual to keep their wheels turning.

Leasing is popular, but most folks I know own their cars and keep them several years or longer, not just one or two.

Allison, I'd heard about that, and I've checked my phone twice. I don't have wi-fi assist. Guess that's further proof that my update went wonky. I can live with that one.

I checked and did, but turned it off even though I have unlimited access.

We own too...but in SE Michigan most people lease. When I tell someone we own our vehicles, their response is almost always one of surprise.
