Just 'leafy', really. Nothing particular - and I do have a very sensitive sense of smell, though I say so myself ;-)

Thanks! Well, the plant in question has a similar odor to leaves in the nightshade family. A bit like a tomato leaf. I guess some similar terpines are to blame.

Is the image your actual seedlings or just something that looks similar? If not, can you post a photo of your seedlings?

Yes, of course! One will be here in a few hours. I held off because it is in the shade and these days have been very cloudy and my smartphone flash causes way too much contrast to see details well blah blah blah :)

OK - I don't know what that is but it isn't any kind of Honeysuckle because it has alternate leaves. Loniceras have opposite leaves. If you look at the other picture you posted you can see the difference in leaf arrangement.

Yes, I had a closer look. Well I am glad it isn't Loniceras. However, on the half acre it is the only incidence (two similar bunches sprouted up within two feet of eachother). And, since the rain, it no longer smells the same. Now it has a sweeter smell. Like graham crackers! Almost everything growing on my lot are exotics popular from the fifties to seventies for southeastern gardens, so I don't have high hopes it is a native. However it could have piggy-backed with some potted plants I bought at a native nursery to install in my rain garden. I dug one up to show you the root structure:

Great pictures but not something I recognise, I'm afraid. But the number of stems coming from a single root does make it look like something pretty vigorous, possibly a vine. Maybe you can watch it carefully and come back with more pictures if there are developments.

It really looks like a bunch of stump or root sprouts from something that was removed previously. I don't recognize it, but that's not too surprising since I haven't spent much time in zone 8.
