Need help coordinating open concept area

I have a ranch style home. It is open concept with entryway, formal dining room, great room, and kitchen all visible. I have hardwood flooring and need to know advice about area rugs. Do they have to match in some way? I have grey walls and furniture. White trim and mantle with mosaic around fireplace.
